From Harrisburg Register August 21, 1918, p.4, c4
OBITUARY Rev. James Johnson, son of John and Polly Johnson, was born in Gallatin county, Ill., June 4 , 1839, and departed this life August 19th, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.L. Rice , at the corner of Homer and Webster streets, Harrisburg, Ill., being at time of death 79 yea rs, 2 months and 15 days old. He was married Dec. 24, 1858, to Miss Nancy J. Graves. To this union were born six children- -four sons, namely; George, who preceded his father to the other world, J.D., Logan and Jake . Two daughters, namely, Mrs. Elvira Elizabeth Lamont of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. C.L. Ric e of Harrisburg, Ill., with whom he made his home. His faithful companion departed this life Nov. 3, 1893; thus leaving him to meet life's battl es alone. He was converted at the early age of 16 years and united with the Baptist church at Big Ridg e and in Aug., 1866, was licensed to preach. Aug. 9, 1873, he was ordained to preach. His m inisterial life was one of activity. He was what we are wont to call a pioneer preacher, hav ing preached all over Saline county and having an active part in establishing the Baptist cau se in this and surrounding counties, preaching in homes, in school houses and in the groves , and wherever it was necessary in order that he preach the Gospel: The converts under his p reaching run up into the thousands and he told the writer two weeks before his death that h e had baptized with his own hands more than thirteen hundred. He had been pastor of the chur ch that licensed him and ordained him (Big Ridge) for a number of years, which is very commen dable. He has been pastor of about 20 different churches in Saline and adjoining counties; h is pastorates varying in length of time, some as long as 9 years. The McKinley Avenue churc h was one of his last pastorates. He has been in declining health for some years and after s pending several months of suffering and confinement to the home most of the time he on the da te above stated gave way to that dread disease dropsy and fell asleep in Jesus. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From Harrisburg Register - August 20, 1918 p.1c.4
