BACKUS, Clinton T., came to Cayuga County in 1860 and engaged in various occupations. Beside s ownership in the Cayuga Plaster Company, the Spring MIlls and several farms, he had extende d interestes in the banking field. He was an organizer and director of the Merchants Union E xpress Company, which later consolidated with the American Express Company. Other activitie s included directorship in the Southern Central Railroad Company. He built the Backus home , with the tower customary to the architecture of that period, on Cayuga Street, opposite th e Post office. This village landmark has recently been torn down. Two sons, Manson and Geor ge, continued in the banking business. A third son, Clinton, Jr., operated the Spring Mills . Grandchildren include LeRoy Backus of Seattle, Washington; Newell D. Backus, Member of th e House of Representatives from the State of Ohio; Jerome D. Backus of Auburn, N.Y.; Andria B . Truesdell of Pulaski, N. Y.; Edgar H.
