  • Note:
John Ross Callen, Sr. moved to Dallas County, Alabama in 1827
from Cabarrus County and Mecklenburg County in North Carolina.
He returned to N.C. to marry Nancy Simpson Kennedy on Oct. 15,
1829. They returned to Dallas County, Alabama and began their
family with the birth of John Ross Callen, Jr. on Sept 25, 1830.

citizens of Mechlenburg County, North Carolina as well as a

  • Note:
  • Note:
Pea Ridge is an area extending from Burnsville, Alabama,West
along a road at the edge a ridge overlooking a swamp (Blue Girth
Swamp) and the valley associated therewith. The road and the
ridge turns gradually to the north. At a point some 3to 5 miles
along this road, down the hill on the right and just beyond a
small branch was situated the Mixon home. Jackie and I visited
this place when we lived in Selma in about 1966. It was a
substantial, sturdy, home, on raised pillars. Not a "grecian
column" style. (this by GFC III 2001)
  • Note:
This road extended along the ridge and passes by the cemetary
which I think is called Oak Ridge Cemetary. Somehow from here a
road forked of to the left and went down into the valley and up
and out the other sidemeting what is now the old Birmingham
Highway. this is quite close to the old Callen Home Place. I
once went a party there held by Nan Callen, daughter of Probate
Judge Jack Callen. The home was a typical "southern Mansion"
columns and all. This was in 1951/52. The home burned down,
    when I don't know
  • Note:
If you follow the Old Valley Creek road, you pass the Valley
Creek Presbyterian Church and Cemetary then on to Summerfield.
