    Information concerning Azariah W. Clark's background is scare, the following letter was dated 11 Nov, 1880, in Orange, New Haven, CT, and written by Arron Clark, brother of William F. Clark, sent to Henry Buel Clark, son of Azariah W. Clark above. . -- Every work is copied as written -

    "I don't remember but little about your Father, (Azariah) when your grandfather, William Fowler Clark, left Bethany for Ohio, your father, (Azariah) was left with my father and when he was old enough to got to a trade he went to live with my brother Merritt, to learn the trade of wagon making, in Northfield, Litchfield, Co. Conn. While with my brother he had a gun burst in his hands and disfigured them some, probably he have heard the circumstances from him. I think I did not see him after he went to his trade. I heard he got uneasy and left my brother's suddenly. I don't remember whether he went to his Fathers or not the next we heard him was after he was married in Canada, there being something of a revolution there, and he being on the party that was beaten in the struggle , he had to flee the county, and as he was leaving, he perceived someone was following him & he turned around and fired at him, and he sees him no more, and got into the United States & afterwards send for his wife & she come to him and this information I received in a letter from your grandfather, William Fowler Clark. " (at the time of the letter, Aaron was 84 yrs old, the struggle mentioned in the letter may have been part of the MacZenie Rebellion)

    After the death of Azariah Clark, his widow, Anna (Service) Clark, lived with
    her dau. Hannah (Clark) and her husband, Calvin Barton. Family tradition says Anna either promise or signed the land over her dau and family if they would live on the farm until she died. See Azariah's Will regarding Anna care.

    In the name of God, Amen, Azariah W Clark, Being of sound mind and being far advanced in years and suffering with a disease that may carry me away from this life at any moment. And being sound desirous that my Real Estate and Personal Property should be inherited in the matter following;
    First By My Wife Ann Clark that she have and use for her Benefit during her natural life the eighty acres that I now live and my personal property after my Funeral Expenses and debts are paid for her use and Benefit
    Second: That I give and bequest unto David A. Clark, My Son, the South Half of the west half of the South East Quarter of Section Eleven in Township Eighty-Five North Range One East of the Fifth PM, allways Provided that he stays and take care of his mother during her natural life. But if he David A Clark should not take care and provide and clothe his mother comforted then the said land shall revert to that child of mine that does take care and provide for his mother. I also give and bequeath unto my son, Henry B. Clark, the North half of the West half of South East quarter of Section Eleven, township Eighty five, North Range one East of the fifth PM it being on the Township of Brandon, County of Jackson State of Iowa, If either David or Henry be without heirs then the other heirs that remains alive shall inherit his part or the proceeds thereof should they chose to sell their part after all reasonable expenses are paid from and I desire that respected friend, Isiash Crabb and my beloved son Richard S. Clark, by my executors in carrying out this my last will and testament. Signed with mark this ninth day of December A.D. 1874.
