  • ID: I05536
  • Name: *Elizabeth Best 1
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 1794 in Wayne County, North Carolina
  • Death: 1862 in Wayne County, North Carolina
  • Note:
The wife of Joab Newsom is clearly identified in the Wayne County, North Carolina August Court 1728 papers as Elizabeth Newsom.

    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Joab Newsom was born 08 December 1770 in Northampton County, North Carolina, son of William Newsom. Joab moved to Wayne County to Basses and Penright's swamp area with his father when William purchased land from Pasco Peelle.

Joab married first Elizabeth Barnes daughter of Simon Barnes and Mary . Elizabeth Barnes was born 22 July 1785. Elizabeth died 1814 in Wayne County.

Joab then married Elizabeth Best born 1794 the daughter of Benjamin Best, Jr. and Mary Hardy. This was reported to Dave Johnston in 1982 by a Kimber N. Best of Wayne County who lived in the Hood Swamp area .

Most interesting is that in the August term of court for Wayne County, 1828, a committee was formed to select land for a dowry for Elizabeth, wife of Joab. This committee was composed of ___ Handley, Giles Smith, Mark Smith, John Smith, Wm. Smith, Jonathan Smith, and two others whom I cannot read.

Elizabeth then had several children by Mark Smith out of marriage and named them Newsome.

Wayne County, North Carolina estate settlement papers dated 18 August 1828 show that Simon and his mother Elizabeth Newsom
were appointed administrators of the estate of Joab Newsom. Two others person joined in the bond of $8000 dollars for the estate: Henry Best and Theophilus Best, Jr. both children of Benjamin Best, Jr. and Mary Hardy.

Benjamin Best, Jr. was born 1766 and married about 1790 Mary Hardy born 1772, daughter of Lemuel Hardy, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Sutton. Benjamin Jr. died 13 September 1850. Mary Hardy Best died 1855 in Wayne County.

Benjamin Best, Jr. lived just east of the Wayne County County line in Greene County.

The children of Benjamin Best, Jr. and Mary Hardy were:

Sarah born 1791 married Haywood Ham
Nancy born 1792 married Thomas Wooten, Sr.
Henry II born 1796 married Smith Sherrard
Patience born 1798 married Benjamin Britt
Theophilus II born 1799 married Nancy Daniel
Elizabeth born 1794 married Joab Newsom
Robert born 1805 married a Edmundson
    Hinton born 1810 unmarried
Lemuel born 1810 married Bethenia Ham
Council born 1815 married Sarah Parks

The Wayne County Heritage Book published 1982 in article #352 entitled the Bests, in the second column, second paragraph states that Bettie child of Benjamin Best, Jr. and Mary Hardy married a Newsom.

Therefore it seems clear the evidence shows that Joab Newsom did marry Elizabeth Best daughter of Benjamin Best, Jr. and Mary Hardy.

After Joab Newsom died, Elizabeth Newsom had several children with nearby neighbor, Mark Smith; see the Wayne County, North Carolina census of 1850, page 179B. Also see the Wayne County, North Carolina Bastardy Bonds of Mark Smith. He was the father of:
Benjamin S. Newsome, Mary Jane Newsome, and Martha Newsome. The children as they were born assumed the name of Newsome.
