  • ID: I6424
  • Name: Joseph ALLEN
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1762 in Virginia
  • Death: BEF 9 MAY 1833 in Elbert County, Georgia
  • Note:

As you can see from the Tithables and Taxable Property list below, there was a Joseph Sr. and Joseph Jr. Allen in Shenadoah County, Virginia. Could our Joseph be the Jr. and his father Joseph Sr.? It should be noted that a son with Jr. after his name did not always mean he was the son of the Sr. but related to him, such as his uncle. More work needs to be done on Joseph’s parents.

Benjamin, Rubin, Liddia, Jackson, Joseph Sr., Joseph Jr., Betty, William and Davis Allen were listed in the 1789 Tithables and Taxable Property list taken in the Shenandoah County, Virginia. Joseph Jr. paid one tithe and taxes on 3 horses on 22 June 1789. Joseph Sr. paid 3 tithes and taxes on 13 horses on 21 September 1789. The other two tithes that Joseph Sr. paid were for William Allen and Samuel Wallen (or Walker).

Benjamin, Lairs, Betty, Aaron, Joseph Sr., Joseph Jr., Thomas, Ruben and Jackson Allen were listed in the 1799 Tithables and Taxable Property list taken in the Shenandoah County, Virginia. Joseph Sr. paid 3 tithes and taxes on 10 horses on 4 July 1799. Joseph Jr. paid 1 tithe and taxes on 4 horses.

Joseph Allen’s family is enumerated on the same page as Barnabas Kelley in the 1820 Elbert County, Gerogia Census. In his family are 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-16 and 1 female over 45 years. May have had one of his son’s family living with him.
