  • ID: I5327
  • Name: William James LAWSON
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1836 in Alabama
  • Death: 11 DEC 1861
  • Note:

William is listed in the 1850 Census living with his parents, age given as 12 years and born in Alabama.

In the library in Jasper, there are files on the O'Rear family. They indicate Ann O'Rear, born about 1833, married a Jim Lawson. From all our records we believe William married a Susan A. O'Rear. Some of the records have her name as Ann and other Susan A. Lawson If this is correct then William's first or middle name could be James? I believe it was his middle name.

From the land records in the Walker County Court House in Jasper, I found the following land transactions for William;-
Received from the U.S. Government, a patent for one hundred and nineteen acres and seventy hundredths of an acre located in the E1/2 of the SW1/4 of Section 30, and the NE1/4 of the NW1/4 of Section 31 in Township 14, of Range 8 West, dated 1 September 1860.

William and Susan Lawson sold to John N. Nelson, for the sum of $10.00, the real estate located in the NE1/4 of SW1/4, Section 30, Township 14, Range 8 West, containing 40 acres more or less, dated 29 August 1860. Interesting that William and Susan sold this land before they had received clear title from the Government. It states in the indenture that William and Susan would warrant and defend the title from claims from the General Government.
This land is located about 2 miles south, southeast of Townley, Alabama.
The indenture is signed with the mark of William and Susan Lason. In the body of the document it spells the last name Lawson and Lasson. Also, in the document it has William's wife's name as Aney, Amy and Ann.
They sure were not very careful with names in these old documents!

William and Susan A. Losson are enumerated in the 1860 Western Division, Post Office Holly Grove, Walker County, Alabama Census. His age is given as 24 years and born in Alabama.

The minutes of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church records, Walker County, Alabama 1845-1883, indicates that at a meeting held October 1860, at the waters edge (I assume this is Lost Creek which is near the church), 14 candidates came forward and received the ordinance of Baptism at the had of S. A. Smith. William and Ann Losson (Lawson) were two of these candidates.
  • Military:
In the 1866 Alabama State Census of Walker County, there is a Susan Lawson, age 30-40 years, with 3 male children. It indicated that this family had a soldier who died of sickness during the Civil War.

William J. Lawson enlisted as a private in the 16th Alabama Infantry, Company C, muster-in at Florence, Alabama on 28 July 1861. Indicated he died of pneumonia on 11 December 1861.

In a Widows Application for Relief by Widows of Confederate Soldiers, under an Act approved February 25, 1887, filed in Walker County, Alabama, Susan A. Lawson personally appeared before John B. Shields and duly sworn that her husband William Lawson, was a private in Company "A" of 22nd Regiment of Alabama Volunteers; that he came to his death from wounds received or disease contracted in the service of the Confederate States, and that his death occurred during the late war or within one year thereafter; that she had not re-married; that she was a resident of Alabama on the 25th day of February, 1887, and is a resident at the date of the application; and that her taxable property did not exceed one thousand dollars in value. Lawson was entitled to relief under the Act approved February 25th, 1887. He signed it 13 June 1887.

That he was killed or died of disease or from wounds during or since said war; that she had not re-married; that she was, on the 13th day of May, 1898, and is then, a bonafide resident of Alabama, and her post office address is Berry Station, Alabama and that her taxable property consists of no property. She placed on mark on the application 13 day of May 1898. The Board of Examiners recommended that the applicant was worthy and recommend that the application be received. It was approved by F. B.
