  • ID: I2647
  • Name: Washington May 'Buck' LAWSON
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 17 FEB 1865 in Aurora, Marshall (Later Etowah) County, Alabama
  • Death: 7 JUL 1936 in Dora, Walker County, Alabama
  • Note:

Death certificate indicated that he was born 1864, died 7 July 1936, age 71 years, father was Jackson Lawson, mother donít know, informate was Jim Lawson, buried Union Chapel Cemetery.

Washington Lassen is enumerated with Cinderilla Lassen in the 1870 page 362b, Sub Division 42, Post Office Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama Census. His age is given as 4 years and born in Alabama.

Washington Lawson is enumerated as nephew, farmer laborer with General and Angline Upton in the 1880 District 60, Township 10, Range 5E, Etowah County, Alabama Census. His age is given as 16 years and born in Alabama.

In a letter to Cary L. Moore asking for information on Washington Lawson, Nelda states, "As you will notice, it is impossible for him (Washington) to be a son of Jackson Lawson, if Jackson died in 1862. It is rumored that Washington Lawson's biological father was Frances Marion (General) Upton." Frances Marion Upton married Angeline Lawson (Washington Lawson's half sister) about 4 years after Washington was born. She also states, "Some family members are not as specific and just say 'he was an Upton'."
Washington Lassen (Lawson) is listed in the 1870 Etowah County, Alabama Census as living with his mother. His age is given as 4 years and born in Alabama.

In the 1900 Bryan, Walker County, Alabama Census, it list Washington and Martha Lawson. It gave his birth date as Feb. 1865, 35 years old, born in Alabama and occupation - farmer, and married for 13 years. It was interesting that the census listed the place of birth for his father as South Carolina?

In the 1910 Walker County Census, it list Washington and Martha Lawson. It gave his age as 45 years old and born in Alabama.

In the 1920 Walker County Census, it list W. M. and M. E. Lawson. It gave his age as 55 years old and born in Alabama. He has two sons living with him, a Mark, age 31 years and a Riley, age 27 years. His wife age is off about 10 years. Do they have another son, named Mark or is that James' middle name or a mistake in the census?

The following information is from Susan Lynn Forbess at SLForbess @aol.com who is a great grand daugther of Washington May Lawson:
Carl, thanks for the info. Yes, Nelda McAfee is married to my first cousin, Wallace. Some years ago, Nelda sent me what information she had. I saw her at a small family reunion in July, and she said that she hasn't learned anything new.

I did talk to my Aunt Bonnie (Lid's wife - Floyd will know who I'm talking about) who said she'd "heard" that Washington May ("Buck") Lawson may have been a "Benefield." I am not certain who Buck's mother was. According to your genealogy page, his mother was Cinderella Lawson, born in 1830. Cinderella's husband, Andrew, died in 1862. Buck was born in 1865. "General" Uptain was born in 1847. Thus, on Buck's birthday, Cinderella would have been 35, and Uptain would have been 18 - seems like an unlikely pair to me. I talked to a lady named Imogene Guest from Ft. Payne, Alabama - she is General Uptain's granddaughter by one of his "legitimate" children, one of Angeline's children - and she believed that Buck was General Uptain's son, but she believed that Buck's mother was Angeline's sister, not Angeline's mother, Cinderella. Angeline's sister, Joanna, had a whole mob of kids fathered by Uptain. Joanna would've been 14 in 1865 - not an impossibly young age, I suppose. But if Buck was her son, why would he be passed off as her brother, since she had at least 6 more illegitimate children with Uptain?
