  • ID: I2336
  • Name: Thomas JOHNSTON
  • Sex: M
  • Note:
Note: Miscellaneous notes on surname Johnston:
On the 13th or 14th of April, 1861, one or two days afterthetelegraph had flashed the intelligence throughouttheCommonwealth that "war had commenced," the StandingStoneGuards, of the borough of Huntingdon, tendered theirservices toGovernor CURTIN. The county was represented inotherPennsylvania regiments as follows (among other regiments) -theBorough of Huntingdon included service in the 192d Regiment, oneyear's service, William F. JOHNSTON, major--Company B,commandedby Captain Thomas S. JOHNSTON

Many Laird researchers believe that a woman named Mary Pattonwas the mother of Jane Johnston Laird. I have not found anydefining evidence to support or refute the theory, but have seensome work that indicates Mary Patton might have been acontemporary of Jane, rather than her mother. At this time, Iam not prepared to conjecture one way or another - I simply donot list a spouse name until I see something concrete.

A note found in my late cousin's research work:
A Johnston daughter married Jacob Laird. Col. Thomas Johnstonwas a distinguished officer in the Revolution. It may bementioned here that these Johnstons are descendants of thecelebrated Johnstons of Dumfrieshire, Scotland. James came toAmerica in 1735. Dr. Robert, a brother of Col. Thomas, and whowas an intimate friend of Washington and Lafayette, and who wasa member of the Society of Cincinnati, joined the Americanforces before Boston, and continued with them until thesurrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. This from the History ofCumberland County, Pennsylvania, publ. 1886.

Mr. Harry F. Johnston, in a tract called "Your Ancestors", saysthe above information does not reference the correct ThomasJohnston for this family. He says: "Thomas, who married MaryPatton, lived in Salisbury Twp, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. His family and those of his brothers, Nathan, David, andArchibald, all claim descent from Archibald, Lord Warriston, whowas executed at the Cross of Edinburgh." This isn't proveneither, but is probably correct.
