Samuel appears in the 1830 Cocke C ounty census and all subsequesnt
censuses through 1860. His widow, Elizabeth , last appeared in the 1870
Cocke census. In both 1850 and 1860 Samuel indi cated that he was born
in TENNESSEE (some researchers indica
VIRGINIA for hi s birth!). His son, James, indicated KENTUCKY for his
birthplace in the 185 0 Cocke census. In the 1850 Cocke census there's a
Mary DENTON, age 32, and her two children, Nancy, age 10, and Thomas, age
6, living in the household o
Samuel (Was this possibly a married daughter?). In ALL census records
through 1860 ALL the members of this family appear in census records as
COCH RAN. Apparently during or just after the Civil War the name change
to CAUGHR ON was adopted by the
