Note: dated Jamesville, 15th August, 1818. This letter was written by the fourteen-year-old son of Maj. Jonathan Harris and his wife, Sarah Alexander Springs, and is addressed to his aunt, Mary Springs.
My Dear Aunt;
My mother requests me to write you a few lines which will inform you that my little brother is much worse than when you left us. He was taken violently ill last evening and still continues so. It is the opinion of those that are about him, that without a great alteration, he cannot survive many hours. Remember Pa and Ma to Aunt and Uncle. JAMES C. HARRIS.
Ye proud, ambitious, wealthy, young and gay, Who drink the spirit of the golden day, And triumph in existence, come with me And in the mouldering corpse our picture see. Which you and all of us must soon or later be. Ův Dr. Young.
JAMES C. HARRIS.
