Timothy was the son of Stephen Carroll and Parizade Dekle of Thomas Co., GA. He enlisted in the service of the Confederacy, against his father's wishes, on April 3, 1863 at Waynesville, GA. He served in Clinch's Georgia Cavalry, Company F., 4th Regiment. On October 27, 1864, Timothy was captured at Talladega, Alabama. He was inprisoned at Louisville Military Prison in Kentucky and transferred to Camp Douglas military prison in Illinois. Timothy was released on June 17, 1865. His prison record describes Timothy as 5'6" tall, light hair, blue eyes and light complexion. Timothy was married four times and he outlived all except for his last wife Elizabeth who was considerably younger. His obituary in the Quitman Free Press described Timothy Carroll as "One of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the county".
