Also seen as Nancy Ann Graves.

Nancy Graves is believed by some researchers to be a mulatto slave owned by General Azariah Graves, the father of Josiah Settle's first wife, Frances Lea Graves. Family tradition tells that the mulatto slave Nancy Graves was given to Frances Lea Graves by her father as a wedding present in 1825-1826.

The 1860 US Census is very interesting. In addition to the above record for the household of Nancy Settle, it shows the following adjacent households:

    1. Robert Settle (25, male, mulatto; born in North Carolina)
    2. H. C. Settle (22, male, mulatto; born in North Carolina). Part of this household is Josiah Settle (60, male, white; born in North Carolina).

1880 United States Federal Census [unconfirmed record]

Note: If Nancy Settle was divorced in 1880 and had an adopted daughter named Rosal Walden, it is possible that the second husband of Nancy Graves Settle was named Walden. This has not been confirmed. Her first husband, Josiah Settle, died in 1869.

While the ancestry of Nancy Graves is uncertain, she is described as mulatto, which indicates a white parent. During the early 1800's this usually meant a white father. It is known that General Azariah Graves did have many slaves and that he made gifts of them before he executed his will in 1843. Some Settle family researchers believe that the mulatto slave Nancy Graves was a gift by General Azariah Graves to his daughter Frances Lea Settle on the occasion of her marriage to Josiah Settle in 1825/26. The will of General Azariah Graves does confirm that he had made a prior gift of slaves to Josiah Settle and his wife Frances Lea Graves Settle ("son-in-law Josiah Settle and decd daughter Frances all negroes given heretofore.").

The only slaves mentioned by name in the will of General Azariah Graves were Big Harry and wife Dolly: "Faithful servant Big Harry and wife Dolly to choose their master from among legatees."
