    _______________

Through the years, Baynes family researchers have stumbled over the identity of the wife of Thornton Yancey Baynes, with some even concluding that he was married twice. The confusion seems to come from the fact that he was the second husband of Mary Elizabeth Willis, who was first married to Zachariah Augustus Pattillo.

The following is from At the Foot of the Lake: The Pattillo-Patillo Family and Allied Lines, Millard Quentin Plumblee (1987) at 190-191:

"Twenty-two months, lacking one day, after the death of Zachariah Augustus Pattillo, his widow, Elizabeth "Bettie" (Willis) Pattillo married Thornton Yancey Baynes on 8 May 1854, with Joseph C. Pinnix as bondsman. Whether Elder Elias Dodson performed the ceremony is presently not known. The place of residence for the newly weds was the former Zachariah Augustus Pattillo home place about 200 feet from the Pattillo cemetery. She was born 5 March 1829, died 6 May 1889, and was buried between her two husbands. All were later removed to Baynes Baptist Church Cemetery."
    _______________

"Bettie Baynes was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Willis of Caswell County, N. C. She married Zachariah Augustus Pattillo on May 22, 1847. He died on July 9, 1852 at age 27, 6 months, 1 day. They had one son, Anderson Henry Willis Pattillo (1848-1878); two daughters, Frances "Fanny" (Pattillo) Osborne; Mary Ann "Mollie" (Pattillo) Rudd (1845-1899). On May 8, 1854 Elizabeth "Bettie" (Willis) Pattillo married Thornton Y. Baynes, and they had issue. Their place of residence was about two tenths of a mile east of present Baynes Church, Caswell County, N. C. In the fall of 1892 the remains of Zachariah Augustus Pattillo, Elizabeth "Bettie" (Willis-Pattillo) Baynes, Thornton Y. Baynes, and Anderson Henry Willis Pattillo were disinterred and reinterred at Baynes Baptist Church Cemetery."

Note that her name also is seen as Mary Elizabeth Willis and as Elizabeth Cerett Pattillo (death certificate of her son James Rainey Baynes).

Thornton Yancey Baynes married Elizabeth B. Willis on 8 May 1854. The Heritage of Caswell County, North Carolina, Jeannine D. Whitlow, Editor (1985) at 505-506 (Article #692 "Martha Elizabeth Baynes Stanfield" by Cynthia B. Howle).

The Pattillo surnamed has been spelled many ways over the years. The spelling used here is based upon the convention adopted by Millard Q. Plumblee in: At the Foot of the Lake: The Pattillo-Patillo Family and Allied Lines, Millard Quentin Plumblee (1987).
    _______________

The following is from Source: At the Foot of the Lake: The Pattillo-Patillo Family and Allied Lines, Millard Quentin Plumblee (1987) at 193-194:

On 10 February 1890, J. R. Baynes, son of Thornton Yancey Baynes and Elizabeth "Bettie" (Willis-Pattillo) Baynes, carried to Spencer B. Adams, Clerk of Superior Court, Caswell County, North Carolina, a paper purported to be the last will and testament of his mother in which J. R. Baynes was named as one of the devisees. He stated that the will had been found in an old trunk along with other valuable papers. W. L. Walker, A. B. Florance, and J. T. Florance deposed and said that they had often seen the writing of Elizabeth B. Baynes and that they were satisfied that the will was in her handwriting.

On 10 March 1890 Thornton Y. Baynes, widower of Elizabeth B. Baynes, filed an affidavit with the Caswell County, North Carolina, Clerk of Court in which he stated that he was present on 8 March 1889 when the valuable papers were found and he certified in writing that he knew the handwriting of his wife, Elizabeth B. Baynes, the deceased, and was satisfied that it was her handwriting. The original handwritten paper was filed with the clerk of court and reads as follows:

March 5, 1886: I, Elizabeth B. Baynes of the County of Caswell and the State of North Carolina being of sound mind and knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do make this my will. I, Elizabeth B. Baynes, give the tract of land known as the Kimbell tract to James R. Baynes. I value the land at sixteen hundred dollars. I want him to pay Archer Baynes one third of that amount and Laura Dillard one third and I want him to keep the land and at his death go to the heirs of his body in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the day and date above mentioned.

The will was recorded in Caswell County, North Carolina. In order to clear the title to the land it is assumed that J. R. Baynes paid his brother and sister. When J. R. Baynes died on 12 September 1923 his children, Bascom T. Baynes, Martha B. (Baynes) Stanfield, and James Macon Baynes inherited the Kimbell tract of land. On 23 February 1932 Bascom T. Baynes sold his share of the Kimbell tract of land to his brother, James M. Baynes for $10.
