John R. Foster, 74, retired pioneer merchant of this city, passed away yesterday at his home on East Davis street following ill health of a year, critical during the past six months. A native of the Union Ridge section of Alamance county. Mr. Foster moved
here and founded the Foster Shoe company which he operated successfully for more than 40 years, having gone permanently into retirement only few years ago.

city, and E. G. Norwood, Bennettsville, S. C.; two sisters, Mrs. A. F. Isley and Mrs. N. C. Garrison: two brothers. Rev. J. L. and Newton Foster, all of Alamance county.

He was throughout his lifetime a devoted member of the Christian church, influential in the development of its program and its work. The funeral service was conducted from the First Christian church this afternoon at 3 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. J. H. Lightboume, assisted by a former pastor. Rev. P. H. Fleming.
