MENTALLY IMPAIRED AND SUICIDAL SINCE DEATH OF FATHER IN 1966. FOUND HIS FATHER WHO SHOT HIMSELF AT HIS GARAGE. BEEN IN NURSING HOME CARE SINCE ABOUT 1974/75. NOW IN CHANUTE, KANSAS AS OF SEPT. 1997.
DEVELOPED PNEUMONIA AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH LUNG CANCER AND SUBSEQUENTLY SURGERY WAS PERFORMED AND DEVELOPED COMPLICATIONS AT THE HOSPITAL IN CHANUTE, KANSAS. HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO ST. JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL IN KANSAS CITY, KANSAS WHERE HE DIED IN A COMATOSE STATE.
AFTER DISCUSSING MATTER WITH HIS BROTHER BRUCE THOMPSON, HE HAD BEEN EMPLOYED AT BEACH AIRCRAFT IN WICHITA, KANSAS SOMETIME IN THE LATE 1960'S TO EARLY 1970'S. HE WAS DISMISSED FROM HIS JOB AFTER PULLING A KNIFE ON ANOTHER EMPLOYEE. HIS MOTHER, NELLIE, BECAME AFRAID OF HIM, BUT HAVE NO OTHER DETAILS AS TO WHAT HIS BEHAVIOR WAS AFTER RETURNING HOME. HOWEVER, HE WAS DIAGNOSED AS A SCHIZOPHRENIC AT THE K.U. MEDICAL CENTER AND LATER ADMITTED TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE FACILITITY WHERE HE HAS REMAINED THE REST OF HIS LIFE.
AS AN INFANT, HE DEVELOPED A HIGH FEVER AND WAS ALWAYS QUITE SLOW AT LEARNING AS A CHILD.(INFORMATION PROVIDED BY HIS SISTERS, EDITH MAE THOMPSON OYLER AND GENEVA ANN THOMPSON KRUSE.

Chanute - Lawrence R Thompson, 60, Chanute, formerly of Independence and Havana, died Sunday, November 9, 1997, at St Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Havana Cemetery with Pastor Ronald j Williams of the Caney Group Parish United Methodist Church as officiant.
Lawrence R Thompson was born Nov. 21, 1936 at Havana to Athal E and Nellie (Click) Thompson. He was raised and attended school in Havana where he also graduated.
He worked as a janitor in the building maintenance department at Beech Aircraft in Wichita for many years and later moved to Chanute.
He is survived by three brothers, Marlin Thompson, Casper, Wyo., Bruce Thompson, Kansas City, Mo., and Gail Thompson, Wichita; two sisters, Edith Ayler, Palatka, Fla., and Geneva Kruse, Ocala, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Eugene, Paul and John, and one sister, Elinor Brooks.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Graves Funeral Home of Caney.
