    Some of the data on tax lists below will be the father of Joseph, who was also a Joseph.

    Joseph Radcliffe, the father of Susannah, purschsed a tract of land on Bush Creek in Frederick County, Maryland, called the "Rights of Man." The confirming deed was dated March 29 1802 and was purchased from Samuel Duvall of Frederick County, Marland. Joseph Radcliffe was identified as "of Anne Arundel County." The tract included 496 acres.

    Charles A. HARVEY assigned his claim of the note
    from Davis to Michael IGLEHART. Guardian was
    Thomas DUVALL; trustee was Francis THOMAS; sale
    made on 9 Oct 1830 to William WILCOXEN for $285.
    On 8 NOv 1830, after the widow released her dower,
    Luke DAVIS testified she was about 26 years old
    and not very healthy; she received 1/7, $4.95;
    each 1/4 share was $7.42; finalized on 14 Apr 1831.

    The Will of Joseph Radcliffe
    In the name of God, Amen. The last Will and Testament of Joseph Radcliff of Frederick Co., Maryland, made in sound and disposing mind and memory this 7th day of March 1814.

    In the first place, I recommend my spirit into the hands of God who gave through the merit of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and as to what worldly goods the Lord has been pleased to bestow upon me, I give and bequeath in the following manner.

    Secondly, it is my will and desire that my executors shall as soon as possible after my decease comply with the executing of the fits herein stated as speedily as possible to all the persons herein claiming under this my last will, equitably and justly.

    Item - I give and bequeath to my wife, Mary Radcliff and her heirs forever 700 pds current money of Maryland., also confirm unto her the gift of all those negroes now living which were conveyed in trust to my son Thomas Radcliff on the 13th day of November 1811, as her estate clear of incumbrance and at her disposal forever, also two cows and calves, and one of my best steers, 4 ewes and lambs, 2 of my feather beds, and their furniture of every kind to them belonging, also 20 barrels of Indian corn, 30 bu. of rye, 500 lbs of bacon and 20 lbs of hogs lard, 15 lbs of hackled flax, one flax wheel and my clock reel, also 6 cups and saucers, 6 knives and forks and two of my iron pots, in full for her part of my estate and no more.

    Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Grover, three hundred dollars for her full part of my estate, and no more, but in case she, my daughter, should not be living to receive said legacy, it is then to be received by the lawful heirs of her body, share and share alike.

    Item - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Davis, my negro man named ARch to her and her heirs forever.

    Item - I give and bequeath to my daughter Catherine Dean by her first marriage and now by her present marriage, Catherine Manicay, my negro lad named James in trust for the benefit of the heirs of her body, and to be possessed by her during her life and by no other person only as she herself shall see proper.

    Item - I give and bequeath to my grandson Luke Davis and his heirs forever, my negro girl named Milly.

    Item - I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Sophia Dean and her heirs forever, my negro girl named Susannah.

    Item - It is now my will and desire that after the above legacies be distributed, and all my just Debts paid and satisfied, then all my Real Estate and the residue of my personal Essate of every kind whatsover, I give and bequeath in the following manner, to my daughter Elizabeth Davis 1/4 part, next to my grandchildren, the sons and daughter of my daughter Susannah Davis and their heirs, a one fourth part to be equally divided amongst them, share and share alike, next to my dau. Catherine Dean by her first marriage, but now by her present marriage Catherine Mannacay, a 1/4 part which to be received by herself and no other person, and distributed by her as she may see fit at any time to the heirs of her body, but to no other person or persons whatsoever, but in case the said Catherine Manacay should not live to receive her above 1/4 part, the h4eirs of her body are hereby authorized to receive it and to be by them divided amongst them share and share alike, and lastly to my son Thomas Radcliffe and his heirs, the other one fourth part which is to be divided amongst them Elizabeth Davis, the heirs of Susannah DAvis, the heirs of Catherine Manacay and Thomas Radcliff and their heirs and divided in such manner as they shall see proper, and lastly, I appoint my beloved son Thomas Radcliff, and my son-in-law Gilbert Davis my only and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament, revoking all and disannulling all others whatsoever.

    In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal in presents of who I have called as witnesses to this my last Will and Testament and as witnesses in the presents of each other.

    Died near Rockville, Montgomery Co., on 11th inst., William a. DOWNEY, Printer, aged 24 years and 9 months.

    Chancery Case: Gilbert DAVIS & Eliza his wife, Joseph DAVIS, Walter DAVIS, George GEBHART & Catharine his wife, Sarah RADCLIFFE & James DEAN. Object of bill is to obtain decree for sale of real estate not being susceptible to division. Bill states that Joseph RADCLIFFE died, seized in fee of considerable real estate, having made his last will. After bequeathing sundry legacies he directs all his real estate as follows: to Elizabeth wife of Gilbert DAVIS, 1/4 part; to grand children, the sons and daus. of Susanna DAVIS, 1/4 part; to his dau Catharine DEAN by her first marriage but by her second marriage, Catharine MANNACAY, 1/4 part and in case she shall not live to receive it to be divided among the heirs of her body and to his son Thomas RADCLIFFE. That Susanna DAVIS named in will is dead, leaving heirs at law the complainants, Joseph Davis and Walter Davis. Mary who married Moses CANNON is now dead leaving the following children: William, Grace, Catharine, and Nace CANNON, all of whom are infants, Catharine DAVIS who married George GEBHART and George DAVIS and Denton DAVIS, minors. Thomas RADLIFFE is also dead since the executin of will, leaving the following children, his his heirs: Sarah, one of the complainants, and James, Joshua, Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, William, Thomas and Upton, who are minors. Catharine MANNACAY was mararired to Barney DEAN by whom she had the following children: Sarah who married Alexander HERRY, Thomas, Josphua and James DEAN, the last of whom is one of the complainants. Said Joseph RADLIFFE at the time of his death was seized of a tract called Rights of Man, 500 acres.

      Text: The 1776 Maryland census was arranged by "hundreds," not parishes. Frederick County then was a much larger area, including present counties of Washington, Montgomery, and parts of Carroll and District of Columbia. Elizabeth Hundred was centered in Hagerstown, Washington County. Sugarland Hundred is in easternmost Montgomery; Poolesville is there. Georgetown Hundred includes present city of Georgetown in D.C. Potomac Hundreds (three of them, Upper, Middle, and Lower) was on the Maryland side of the Potomac River between Georgetown and Sugarland hundreds. Westminster was in Pipe Creek Hundred.
