    Robert Bruce Elder, 72, of Annapolis, Md., formerly of Rochester Mills, died at his home Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2001. He had been battling cancer.

    He was a son of David A. Elder, who died in 1996 (sic; s/b Eugene Everett Elder who died in 1958).

    Mr. Elder was a retired oceanographer and program director for the National Science Foundation and his work included exploration of Antarctica. He served in the southwest Pacific at the close of World War II.

    He was a graduate of Union College in Barbourville, Ky., attended graduate school at Texas A&M University and received a master's degree in marine science from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.

    He began his career with the U.S. Naval Hydrographic Office, Washington, D.C. In the 1960s, he was a scientist in the United States Antarctic Research Program, conducting investigations into the formation of bottom water during several Antarctic voyages.

    In 1968, he was chief oceanographer on the first International Weddell Sea Oceanographic Expedition on board the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Glacier. During this expedition, the Glacier penetrated the Antarctic's ice pack deeper than any vessel had previously done.

    A cliff on the east coast of Palmer Land, a peninsula in western Antarctica, is named in Mr. Elder's honor.

    In the 1970s, he was a program director in the National Science Foundation's Office of Oceanographic Facilities Funding and Support. After he retired from there in 1981, he was a home-improvement contractor, specializing in older homes in the historic district of Annapolis. His interests included furniture making.

    Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Maryan, Annapolis; four children: Eleanor Elizabeth Elder, Annapolis; Eugene Everett Elder, Austin, Texas; Mary Elder Jacobsen, Rochester, Vt.; and Willard Furey Elder, Annapolis; two brothers, L. Wayne Elder, Rochester Mills; and Ernest Elder, New Kensington; and four grandchildren.
