  • Name: William Isaiah Coe
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1828 in Wood County,VA USA
  • Death: 11 MAY 1898 in Elizabeth,Wirt County,WV USA
  • Note:
WILLIAM ISAIAH6 COE (John5, Walter4, William3, Richard2, Richard1) was born in 1828 in Wood County, VA. On September 9, 1854, he and his brothers received several tracts of land on the Little Kanawha River from their father. A private with the 10th West Virginia State Militia (Union), during the Civil War, he later lived at Tygart, WV, where he was a farmer. In 1867 he and his wife bought an acre of land on Worthington Creek from John H. Scott. He appears in the 1880 census of Wirt County.

Noted as a miscellaneous sort of citizen, on October 3, 1890, his name appeared in The Daily State Journal, charged with cattle theft:

"... Sheriff Woodyard of Wirt County, arrived in the city this morning in search
of a yoke of cattle and the man who stole them. The cattle belonged to Woodyard
himself. He and Chief of Police Dils started out on the search of cattle and thief
and soon succeeded in finding the oxen on Mr. M. V Traugh 's farm.
Mr Traugh had bought them yesterday of William I. Coe of Elizabeth, thinking
that they belonged to Coe and that he had the right to sell them. It turns out that
Coe had stolen them from Mr. Woodyard and brought them clown from Wirt
county yesterday. Mr; Woodyard regained possession of his oxen and Capt. Dils
expected to get his hands on Coe this afternoon and dwnp him in jail.
... The particulars of the case are as follows: E.R. Woodyard, Sheriff of Wirt
county, had a dapple grey pony about two years ago; he let a man named W.I. Coe
take the horse and use it for its keeping. With consent of Woodyard, Mr. Coe traded
the horse for a yoke of small steers. This was almost two years ago. It now transpires
that the cattle were sold to M. V. Traugh of the county by Coe who claimed
the cattle were his property and that Woodyard intimated lie might have them."

He died May 11, 1898, at Elizabeth.

He married August 9, 1859, in Wood County, VA, Jerusha Foley, born 1832 in Virginia, daughter of Hugh P. and Priscilla (Creel) Foley.
