Janie Tremont remembered that he spent a great deal of effort and money trying to locate his brother Lester, who had abandoned his wife and seven children around 1930. He even went so far to hire a private detective. Edward remained a bachelor. He was remembered as a "big" and generous man. Kate Spies recalled [May 4, 2002] that he was so fat, he got a new car every year because he would blow out the springs in the front seat. He would take her and her brother Jimmy for a ride each time he got a new car.
According to his death certificate, he died of pulmonary edema.

Edward H. CAPELS Funeral Services To Be Held Saturday
The funeral of Edward H. Capels, employment manager of the Halcomb Plant of the Crucible Steel Company of America, who died Tuesday at his home, 1010 Avery Avenue, will be held Friday. Rites will be at 9 A.M. at the home and a hour later in the St. Brigid's Church, of which he was a communicant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Capels had been ill for three months and was forced to retire in April. He was a native and life resident of Syracuse and had been associated with the steel company for 25 years.
