San Diego's First Papal Knight Dies

Albert Vincent Mayrhofer, 58, Papal knight and lifelong San Diegan prominent in civic and business circles, died at his home, 1572 Second Ave., last night after a long illness.

Mr. Mayrhofer and his wife were the first couple in the United States to be invested, at the same time, with the titles of Knight and Lady of the Holy Sepulcher, and he was the first native of San Diego to receive the title. The late Pope Pius XI conferred the titles in recognition of their leadership in the restoration the Old Mission of San Diego de Alcala.

    BISHOP OFFICIATES
The late Most Rev. John J. Cantwell, D.D., then Bishop of Los Angeles and San Diego, officiated at the investiture, one of San Diego's most colorful religious ceremonies, on March 24, 1935 at St. Joseph's Cathedral. A dinner and reception at El Cortez Hotel followed the public ceremony.

The decoration Mr. Mayrhofer received was a large red enameled cross with a narrow border of gold, surmounted by a royal crown. As a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher, he held an honored position as guard in the pope's retinue.

    EDUCATED HERE
Mr. Mayrhofer, born Sept. 28, 1889, was the son of Anton and Elizabeth M. Mayrhofer, both natives of Tyrol, Austria. He attended St. Joseph's Academy and St. Vincent's College, Los Angeles, but illness prevented his college graduation. On Dec. 31, 1919, he was married to Miss Marie Louise Howley in San Diego.

As a young public official, realtor and banker, Mr. Mayrhofer was active in religious and civic affairs long before becoming chair-

man of the Mission's restoration committee.

In 1911 he became lay representative, in the City and County, for bishops whose jurisdiction extended over the County. He had been president of the St. Joseph Branch, Holy Name Society; vice president, diocesan Council of Catholic Welfare and of the diocesan Holy Name Union; chairman, Catholic Welfare Board of San Diego, and secretary-treasurer of the St. Joseph Branch, St. Vincent de Paul Society.

    SOCIETY PRESIDENT
In 1922 Mr. Mayrhofer originated a program, under auspices of the Native Sons of the Golden West, to honor each of the four flags that have flown over San Diego - Spanish, Mexican, independent California and United States. He was the Native Sons' state chairman for the 1942 Admission Day and Cabrillo celebrations and, although ill at Mercy Hospital at the time, saw his Admission Day plans successfully materialize.

As California State Historical Society president, Mr. Mayrhofer officiated at San Diego's 338th birthday observance in 1942.

He was appointed manager of the new business department of the California Savings & Commercial Bank in 1927, after having been superintendent at Lakeside Inn and Ranch for 2 years, director of collections on Exposition subscriptions 2 years and a deputy county official 5 years. In 1930 he became public relations and business extension manager for the Bank of America here.

    ACTIVITIES RECALLED
Mr. Mayrhofer served as deputy county assessor, deputy collector and deputy auditor form 1918 to 1923, and was treasurer of the Red Cross War Fund here in 1917. He was a member of the San Diego Welfare Commission from 1932 to 1934, and was the first chairman of the City Water Commission serving until a few years ago. In the Native Sons of the Golden West, he had been deputy grand president since 1923.

Besides his wife, Mr. Mayrhofer is survived by a son, Albert V. Mayrhofer Jr., and two daughters, Misses Marie Louise and Elizabeth Ann Mayrhofer. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Ryan Mortuary.

    500 ATTEND ROSARY FOR A. V. MAYRHOFER

More than 500 San Diegans last night paid tribute to Albert Vincent Mayrhofer, 58, San Diego's first Papal Knight and longtime civic business and civic leader, as four priests led the recitation of the rosary in St. Joseph's Cathedral. He died Sunday night in his home, 1572 Second Ave.

Solemn High Mass of Requiem Coram Pontifice will be celebrated at 10 this morning in the Cathedral. Members of the Young Men's Institute, Holy Name Society of St. Joseph's Parish, and the Third Order of St. Francis, will form the honorary guard. A delegation of Papal Knights and Ladies from Los Angeles also is expected to attend.

In honor of Mr. Mayrhofer's station in the church, the casket - usually closed in the church - was open and was situated before the high altar at last night's rite. It was to remain in that position all night - an honor paid only to high officers of the church. The casket will be closed at the mass today.

The silver and black casket was draped with Mr. Mayrhofer's white Papal cape, on which is the Papal emblem of four small crosses within a large cross. Also on the casket were his white-plumed Papal hat, white gloves, gold-handled sword and gold spurs. The Papal robes, in which he will be buried, are of white with black trim. The emblem of the Crusaders of the Holy Sepulcher, gold crosses on a red enamel background, also will be buried with him in the old Catholic Cemetery, Mission Hills. At the request of the family, there were no flowers.

Officiating clergy at last night's rite included Rt. Rev. John J. Hegarty, Rt. Rev. Laurence Forristal, Very Rev. Francis Dillon, and Rev. John Daley, S.S.C.

SOLEMN COMMEMORATION MARKS SERVICES FOR PAPAL KNIGHT
800 Hear Mass Celebrated for A. V. Mayrhofer

"Eternal rest grant unto his soul, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him; may he rest in peace."

These words from the Roman Catholic Mass of the Dead were pronounced yesterday at a Solemn High Mass of Requiem Coram Pontifice for Albert Vincent Mayrhofer, 58, San Diego's first Papal Knight and longtime civic and business leader.

At one of the largest funerals in local Catholic history, more than 800 persons paid final tribute to Mr. Mayrhofer during the solemn ceremonies in St. Joseph's Cathedral.

    POLICE IN ESCORT
The funeral procession, approximately 8 blocks long, was escorted by 15 motorcycle patrolmen from the San Diego Police Department to the old Catholic Cemetery, Mission Hills, where many of the City's pioneers are buried. The huge stone cross marking the grave of Father Antonio D. Ubach, who built the first St. Joseph's Cathedral here, is between that tomb and the Mayrhofer family plot.

Priests from the four Deaneries of the San Diego Diocese participated in the celebration of the Mass, and nuns, representing the various orders, attended in a body. City and County officials and former business associates of the deceases also were present.

    FIRST TO BE HONORED
Mr. Mayrhofer, a native of San Diego, died Sunday night in his home, 1512 Second Ave. He and his wife, Marie Louise Howley Mayrhofer, were the first United States couple to be invested at the same time with the titles of Knight and Lady of the Holy Sepulcher.

At the services, Mrs. Mayrhofer wore over her heart the insignia of the Crusaders of the Holy Sepulcher, gold crosses on a red enamel background. Her husband was buried in the white wool robes of the order with the emblem on his chest.

    HIGH HONOR PAID
The closed casket was placed before the high altar of the Cathedral, where it had been since the recitation of the Rosary the night before - an honor paid only to high dignitaries of the church. Also in honor of his station, the casket - usually closed in the church - was open during the Rosary. The Ryan Mortuary was in charge.

In front of the silver and black steel casket, draped with Mayrhofer's white wool Papal cape, Rt. Rev. John Hegarty, pastor of St. George's Parish, Ontario, celebrated the Mass. The altar coverings were of purple signifying death. Also on the casket were Mr. Mayrhofer's white-plumed Papal hat, white gloves, gold-handled sword and gold spurs. The Papal emblem, four small crosses with a large cross, was visible in the folds of the cape.

    CHILDREN SING
The Children's Choir of St. Joseph's School sang the Mass and Very Rev. Francis Dillon, Cathedral Rector, spoke a few words of sympathy to the family. At the request of the deceased, there was no eulogy.

Most Rev. Charles Francis Buddy, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese, presided at the high altar and, at the close of the Mass, the Bishop, with the approximately 35 priests, escorted the casket to the vestibule. There, after progressing through a double column formed by the honor guard, each priest gave a final prayer and Bishop Buddy gave the Absolution, or last blessing of the body with holy water and incense.

    ORGANIZATIONS AID
The honor guard was made up of members of the Third Order of St. Francis, Holy Name Society of St. Joseph's Parish, Young Men's Institute, and Native Sons and Native Daughters of the Golden West, in which Mr. Mayrhofer formerly was active.

Officers of the Mass were Rev. Fr. Michael O'Shea, pastor of St. Timothy's Parish, Los Angeles, deacon of the Mass; Rev. Fr. Matthew Thompson, of Corona, sub-deacon, and Rev. Frs. Richard Daniels, secretary to the Bishop, and James Ludwig, assistant to the Cathedral masters of ceremonies.

    CHAPLAINS ASSIST
Chaplains to Bishop Buddy were Rev. Frs. Malachy O'Sullian, of National City, and Joseph V. Clarkin, of La Jolla. Also at the altar during the Mass were Rt. Revs. Francis C. Ott and Laurence Forrestal, and Very Rev. Franklin Hurd.

At the cemetery, Msgr. Hegarty blessed the grave and conducted the final obsequies, assisted by Father Dillon. The plot, where Mr. Mayrhofer's parents, Anton and Elizabeth M. Mayrhofer, are buried, is beneath a large pepper tree, which also shades the grave of Father Ubach. The early-day priest who built the first St. Joseph's Church in 1875, died March 27, 1907, after 41 years of religious service in San Diego. The cemetery, now City owned, is used rarely and only by members of pioneer families who have plots there.
