Note: The ancestors of Daniel Haigh b. 1801 are not proved and need further research. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the Foreward and first page of the Daniel Haigh family genealogy compiled and typed by Emma Louise Hill in 1932. Transcribed by Susan Kimes Burgess, July 6, 2004. (In order to save space I didn't indent paragraphs nor did I double space between each descendant.)
Foreward This is an effort to locate the living descendents of Daniel Haigh and his wife, Nancy Morehouse Haigh, who came in March 1847 from the Province of Yorkshire, England, with nine of their ten children, (William remaining) to the United States, thus making good Americans of us all and saving us that trouble.
The names, occupations, addresses of our relatives now living will be found at the end of this compilation, arranged as to families. This should be of interest to us all.
Corrections, further data as to births, deaths, marriages, as they may occur, changes on address or occupation will be gratefully received by me.
Please consider yourself the secretary of your family and send any data to my present address, 162 South Roosevelt Ave., Pasadena, California. I sincerely thank all my relatives for the help which they have so kindly given me.

Upon their arrival in the United States, our grandparents settled near Yorkville, Illinois. Two grandsons, Fred G. Hill and Arthur P. Hill and their respective wives reside in the old home town.
In 1869 grandfather married Rachel Pearson, 1792-1871 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daniel supposedly married a third time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The history of the family of Daniel Haigh is in the archives of William Jewel College (Baptist), Liberty, Mo. This short history of his family was written by Stella Cornelia (Fisher) Burgess and found in her belongings upon her death.
"Daniel Haigh of Yorkshire, England was one of a group of people who migrated, before the Civil War, to Kendall, Co., Illinois. The towns which they named Yorkville and Bristol show their backgrounds.
The Haighs were descendents of French Huguenots who fled Catholic persecution. York was famous for its dyes, the secrets of which these immigrants brought with them from France.
Daniel Haigh was born on December 3rd, 1801. (Stella Fisher Burgess ought to know, for she was born just 80 years later, on the same day.) His oldest son, William Morehouse Haigh, came to America some years after his father, held pastorates in several Illinois towns - Woodstock, Galesburg (where his daughter Emma graduated from Knox College in 1877 - an unusual thing for a woman in those days. Emma Haigh Fisher was the honored alumna at their 60th anniversary in 1937.) William Haigh was chaplain for the 36th Illinois Regiment and endured all the hardships of the Civil War. Because he would not leave his wounded men he was taken prisoner, had only corn-cobs for those three days. Twenty years later his fellow-prisoners held a special celebration and presented him with a dress sword. This sword was destroyed in Japan in the earthquake and fire of 1923, in Yokohama.
The oldest (No, the 3rd) daughter of Daniel Haigh, Emma, married Uncle Tom Hill, and many are the descendents of this marriage - as Elmwood Cemetery (sic) at Yorkville will testify. In the lot belonging to the William Haigh family are he, his wife, Sarah Brown Haigh, their infant son, the ashes of their daughter Emma Haigh Fisher who spent 50 years in Japan. (The ashes of the latter's husband, Chas. Henry Day Fisher are on the hillside on the Yokohama Cemetery (sic).) Also the bodies of their second daughter, Ella Haigh Googins, and that of her husband Franklin H. Googins for many years in the stockyard industry of Chicago.
The twin brothers of William Haigh, Joseph and Benjamin were also in the Civil War. The twins volunteered together. They had never been separated until Ben was shot and had to be left behind by his comrades. James Boomer (later in life helped to find (sic) Ottawa Univ. in Kansas) married their sister Mary. James was a bridge builder, and in his war travels, he set himself to the task of finding the burial place of Benjamin. He studied records of hospitals. At last he came upon a new hospital where a patient - shot in the face had died before he could be identified. Among his effects were letters from Mary Boomer. The other twin, Joseph, was a prisoner in Libby Prison where pepper was poured into his eyes. After several years in a mental hospital, he completely recovered."
At the time of birth of Stella Fisher her father Rev. C. H. D. Fisher was a home missionary in Duluth, Minnesota just after a boom had collapsed. Their anxiety about the birth of their first child, sent them eventually to the home of Dr. William H. Haigh, 3514 Vernon Ave. Chicago. The date was December 3rd, 1881. Attending physicain (sic) Dr. Durfee. The family joke was, that Stella was born in the temporary absence of her parents.
When she was eight months old, her parents, sailed from Boston for India stopping first at the homes of each of her great-grandfathers Daniel Haigh in Bristol, Illinois, and Myron Brown in Haskins (near Toledo) Ohio. When but six weeks at his Madras station, her father received a cable, "Fisher go Japan" which meant Yokohama and Tokyo. On November 28, 1888 the family sailed for San Francisco. Since the new Haigh home in Chicago was not complete, for three months, she lived at the home of James and Mary Boomer, Fairview, Kansas." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812 about Daniel Haigh Name: Daniel Haigh Baptism Date: 13 Dec 1801 Parish: Marsden, St Bartholomew Father's Name: Daniel Haigh
