Note: --GEORGE BRUTON was definitely one of the earliest of the family to inhabit the area around Loosing Swamp & the Briery Branch in Johnston/Dobbs Co NC. I am attempting to connect GEORGE BRUTON and his descendents with the Brutons of Surry Co VA. Comments appreciated. More research to come. --A 1736 land deed in Edgecombe Co NC shows BENJAMIN BRUTON as witness. He would have to had been at least 21 years old in order to witness the deed, thus putting his birthdate at 1715 or earlier. This is absolutely the earliest Bruton record I have fou nd so far in NC; it might be that BENJAMIN BRUTON Sr b abt 1715 was a brother to GEORGE, and not a son. BENJAMIN BRUTON also purchased land in 1749 in Johnston Co NC, just a year after GEORGE received his land grant. More research to come. --1748 Oct 5 Minutes of the North Carolina Governor's Council, New Bern, Craven Co NC: Petitions for Warrants for Land, GEORGE BRUTON 200 acres in Johnston Co NC. In order to patent land, this GEORGE would have had to have been of legal age, thus born at very least by 1727 (in order to be twenty one years old). --1750 July 9th, Johnston Co NC (formed from Craven); WILLIAM COLLINS 300 acres in Johnston Co on Bryrie Branch, adjoining GEORGE BRUTON & the Loosing Swamp (Loosing Swamp was actually named Lucerne Swamp, after the Swiss City, due to the area of New Bern being settled by Swiss colonists, but over time the name evolved from Lucerne to Loosing). --1754 Craven County Book of Land Patents and Surveys 028.405 or 406 found inArchives; a. p 70 Sept 1, 1754 - WILLIAM MOORE - beginning on Bryery Branch at a Red Oak N 260 poles to GEORGE BRUTON line, then down BRUTON line to Loosing Swamp then down Swamp 260 poles to a pine thence to the 1st station cause by Deed bearing date Sept 1754. Beginnin g at Red oak on the Bryery Branch and runs thence another 174 poles to a pine thence east l68 poles and a white oak on the Loosing Swamp thence down said Swamp to the fork then up to the Bryery Branch to the lst station containing by estimation 200 A - be ing part of a greater tract granted to WILLIAM COLLINS bearing date 9 July 1750 --1757 MAY 25 Johnston Co NC ; JOHN POWELL 200 acres in Johnston Co on south side Loosing swamp, being the place formerly surveyed for himself, joining GEORGE BRUTON & said swamp. --1757 Nov 26, Johnston Co NC; BARTHOLOMEW COINE 640 acres in Johnston Co on N side Neuse River on the Loosing Swamp, joining Joseph Miller, Joshua Stanley, John Powell, Henry Turner, WILLIAM BRUTON and said swamp. JOHN was granted an additional 200 acres on April 28, 1768 on the north side of the Neuse River and Briery Branch. In 1775-1776 JOHN is listed as receiving payment for services in the Continental Army. In December 1778 he became a member of Captain Samuel Ash's 1st Troop of the North Carolina Light Dragoons, rem aining in this Revolutionary War service until 1781. He had 7 children. 4 boys George, Nathan Jackson, Joseph Washington, and Benjamin and 3 girls Clarissa, Mary, Cecelia. More research to come.
