Washington Co, TN Marriages 1780-1870, page 164: J. B. Hale married Sue M. Crouch 11/18/1869 by William A. Keen M.G.

It is altogether possible that Susan M. Crouch could be Nancy S (Susan) Crouch, who is listed in 1850 census as the youngest child of John Crouch and Nancy Barron Epperson Crouch. According to the research of Glen Crouch (ggcrouch@aol.com), John and Nancy Barron Crouch had the following children:
Sarah (who married Howell Hodges and may be the Sarah Hodges in the same cemetery 10/17/1818-8/08/1880), Elijah, Jesse, James, Joseph, Josephine, and SUSAN. I have the 1850 Census for Elijah and Elizabeth Crouch, and it shows that Susan their daughter was born about 1847. The 1860 census shows the same.

In 1870, Elijah and Elizabeth lived in Sullivan County, and are listed in the 1870 Hiltons, Sullivan Co, TN Census page 543.

    Notes for SARAH 'SALLY' CROUCH:
Sarah Crouch's birth date has also been reported as 1795, but that would make her 15 when she married. On the other hand, the 1870 census appears to indicate that she was born in 1785 or 1786. Helen Moore Poland, a descendant-in-law who is probably the foremost authority on the Poland/Crouch family, lists Sarah's birth date as 1789.]
[1850 census Owen Co KY (Microfilm Roll #216) lists Jacob & Sarah (Crouch) Poland (lists other Crouches but not William). 1870 census Gallatin Co KY lists Sarah (Crouch) Poland ae 84 with younger Polands and younger Crouches in same listing.

Elijah Crouch and family moved from Washington Co., TN, To Gallatin County, KY, near Warsaw, in 1830. The family cemetery they are buried in, is on what is known as the John Crouch farm. It was evidently the Elijah Crouch homeplace. There are two markers for Elijah and Sarah Crouch. A larger one evidently added years after the original. They vary, one reading Elijah Crouch - b. 4 May 1790 -, and the other one - b. 14 May. One read Sallie, wf of E. Crouch, with the above dates. The other reads Sally, wf of Elijah Crouch, d. 30 Mch. 1863, age 72 yrs, 11 mos, 18 das

    Notes for JESSE HITER CROUCH:
From an Account of Ancestors & Siblings by William Anderson Crouch:
Hiter Crouch was one of the most useful citizens locally, politically, morally, religiously, and along all progressive lines to be found in Washington County, Tenessee. His oldest son, William S. Crouch, of whom I have previously made mention, was, beyond controversy, a man who represented a large number of the virtues of as lofty a manhood as any of the Crouch family, as far as my knowledge extends. His brother, A. L. J. Crouch was a close second, and surpassed him in some lines of self-expression. His power of analysis, in determining the important principle in difficult and complicated questions was of a high order. His ability to commit his thoughts to written form in the most concise form, and in the most beautiful chirography which I have never seen equaled, much less surpassed. His son, Elbert, was the father of Rev. Austin Crouch, a Baptist minister of more than ordinary usefulness and prominence. (Austin was pastor of First Baptist, Murfreesboro, TN, wrote "The Plan of Salvation", 1924.)

    Holston Baptist Female Institute

In 1853 the Holston Association recommended the founding of a high school for girls - Holston Baptist Female Institute (HBFI). The Fall Branch Seminary was recommended for men.

First board of trustees of the HBFI included: W. Cate, W.C. Newell, M.V. Kitzmiller, J.A. Davis, W.A. Keen, E. Martin, J.H. Crouch, J. White, W.H. Humphreys, J. West, M.C. Hunter, R.P. Murray, J. Bayless, S.H. Smith, C. Hoss, J.D. Gibson, A. Brown and J. Spurgeon

The school building was a large brick building at what is now 233 E. Main St.. The school was never very prosperous. In 1856 it suffered from "exaggerated reports of scarlet fever and smallpox in the vicinity of Jonesborough." During much of the Civil War the doors were closed. At the close of the war the school was deeply in debt to Z.L. Burson. Rev. J.D. Tadlock was permitted to move his school for boys from the Presbyterian Church to the Baptist school house. In 1867 Col. Robert H. Dungan, brother-in-law of Burson and an ex-officer of the Confederate Army purchased the school and established the successful Holston Male Academy.

    Notes for THOMAS HITER CROUCH:
    Sketches Of

    Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers

    THOMAS HITER CROUCH

    (page 134)

The subject of this sketch was born February 10, 1833, on the Watauga River, near the mouth of Boone's Creek, Washington County, Tenn. He was a son of John and Sarah (Epperson) Crouch. Young Crouch was converted in his early teens in a meeting held with Buffalo Ridge Church by Elders W. A. Keen and Asa Routh. He was ordained at the same time with John Davidson and George P. Faw by the authority of the above church, of which all three were members, Elders Keen, Routh and Eli Ratliff acting as a presbytery. March 20, 1861, he was married to Sophia Bowers, a daughter of Lawrence A. Bowers, of Boone's Creek, who lived to be 95 years old, and was a member of the County Court of Washington County for thirty or forty years, and many years its chairman. To this union were born ten children, seven sons and three daughters, a family of born teachers, it would seem; at least seven of them are, or have been, teachers of the youths of the country. There are twenty-one grandchildren, and four out of the number are teachers, while others perhaps are candidates for the office.

He was pastor of the following churches: Limestone, Philadelphia, Harmony, Antioch, Whitesburg, Johnson City, Sinking Creek, Fordtown, New Salem, Muddy Creek, Clear Fork, Double Springs, Boone's Creek, and perhaps others.

Elder Crouch had the true missionary spirit. He helped build church houses for the Baptists, and freely and liberally gave time and money to the Lord's work. He was a "modest and unassuming man, preached the gospel in a quiet but earnest manner, and was a sweet singer in Israel." His death occurred June 11, 1894. He died as he had lived, victorious through faith, and was buried in the Boone's Creek Cemetery, where the "mortal" waits to put on the "immortality" of the resurrection state.
