Sarah Beale -- sjbeale@bellouth.net -- Abstract of Warren Co, NC, Will Book 8 Entry 16: 11 Dec 1794; /s/ 6 Jan. 1795; Feb.Ct. 1795. Sale Est. Joseph Lindsey, dec'd. by Caleb Lindsey, Extr. Purchasers: John Vanlandingham, Jno. Sims, Z. Daniel, William Dotson, Jno. Hagood, Peter Fleming Junior, Bartlet H. Hilliard, Buck Dotson, Jas. Bullock, Charles Marshall, Anderson Paschael, William Sims, Peter Rigan, Jesse Cunningham, Dennis Paschael, Caleb Lindsey, Obed Earls, Gulielmus Smith, Thomas Fleming, Laban Lindsey, Wm. Burras, Rachael, Lindsey, Edmund Smith, Jas. Ellington, Jas.Green, Richard Bullock, Danl. Johnson, Sarah Lindsey, Wm. Rieve, Sam Paschael Junior, Wm. H. Searcy, Solomon Green, Jas. Caller, Charls Flemming, Mary Flemming, Dakas Lindsey, Ben Thurman, Jno. Watkins, and Vincent Vaughn Connections with Fentress Co: I believe that this is the Peter Reagan who came to Fentress--Grandfather of John Reagan. The Vanlandingham family married into the Cauthon family in NC and I believe this is a connection to Nancy Cauthon who married Peter Reagan's son Peter (mother of John).

James W. Garrett -- In 1771 Bute NC there was both Charles Riggan Sr & Charles Riggan. I am speculating that Charles is s/o Charles Sr Riggan. A Charles Riggan (Jr?) md Zillah Lindsay, sister of Rachel Lindsey (wife of Peter Reagan). Thus, I am speculating that Charles (Jr) & Peter were brothers marrying two Lindsay sisters. Since Peter & Charles exists in 1771 (both born by 1750) along with Charles Sr, Charles Sr was likely born bef 1728. Again I am only speculating w/o proof.

Following is correspondence between Sarah Beale -- sjbeale@bellsouth.net -- and Jim Garrett -- jgarrett@btes.tv

Sarah (from Jim) Eli Rgn of Ashe NC first appears in 1790 Rowan NC. I have been trying to figure out to whom he belongs to. He appears to have been born by 1753. There were other Rgns in Rowan. 1774 Rowan NC Peter Rgn & Thomas Rgn enlists in Rev War in Salisbury Dist (I do not think this is our Peter Sr) 1778 Rowan Wm Rigin in Lopp's Dist Wm Rigin in Capt Davis's Dist 1779 -A Wm Rgn wad a guard at the Salisbury Dist Goal. (Note that Peter & Thomas enlisted in Salisbury Dist) -A Peter Rgn enters 250 acres on Rich Fork of Abbott Cr (I dont think this is our Peter Rgn of Wilkes. Our Peter is in Wilkes at this time. I think this Peter of Rowan is the Peter that enlisted in 1774 with a Thomas Rgn. What happened to Thomas? 1780 Rowan Peter Ragain is 1st Corporal in Samuel Reid's Company 1784 Rowan Peter Rgn is in Capt Davis' Dist at Rich Fork This is where a Wm Rgn was (Capt Davis's Dist) in 1778 1785 Rowan James Rgn on a tax list He md Sarah Giliam Peter Rgn enters 210 acres on waters of Abbots Creek Meantime our Peter in Wilkes purchased 100 acres on Naked Cr 1786 Rowan NC A Daniel Rgn of Surry VA obtains 200 acres on Beaver Branch of Hunting Creek. This Rgn is from the Daniel-1/ I of W & Surry VA. He later sell the land in 1791. I dont think he ever settled the land but remained in Surry. 1790 Rowan (Salisbury Dist) Eli Rgn James Rgn 1790 Wilkes Peter Rgns 1799 Wilkes NC tax Charles Rgn (s/o Peter Sr) Joel Rgn (s/o Peter Sr) Elizabeth & Mary Rgn purchased 100 acres on Naked Creek. Who are these two ladies???? Eli Rgn's wife was named Mary. Same year in Nov a Mary Ragan & Eli Ragon is a witness for Calderon on Naked Creek. Because these unidetified Rgn are on or near Naked Creek, I believe somehow they are related to Peter. 1799 Ashe (formed from Wilkes) Peter Rgn obtained a land grant I think he is ours. He simply obtained more land that is now in Ashe County, near Wilkes. 1800 Ashe Charles Rgn (s/o Peter) Eli Rgn (s/o?) Morgan Dist 1800 Wilkes Wm Rgn (s/o Peter) Joel Rgn (s/o Peter 1801 Wilkes Peter sell 100 acres 1802 Ashe Peter obtains a land grant 1805 Wilkes tax Peter Ragan Jr Joel Rgn Charles Rgn 1807 Wilkes Peter Rgn enters 150 acres on Naked Cr 1807 Ashe Eli Rgn dec'd wife: Mary Sons: Jacob, David, Daniel, Eli 1810 Wilkes Wm Rgn Peter Rgn (Sr) Joel Rgn 1810 Ashe C. Rgn (Charles) s/o Peter Sr? But this Charles is b. 1794-1800. M. Ragans (unknown maybe Mary, widowed wife of Eli? But head of HH is an older male) J. Rgns (Jacob) s/o Eli P. Rgn (b. 1784-94) not sure, maybe Peter Jr This Peter has 2 sons b. 1800-1810 (John & Charles?) However, This Peter is younger than Peter Jr (b. abt 1778/79). Also Peter Jr has 3 sons b. 1800-1810: John 1802, Charles 1803, and Joel 1807. A Wm Finley also appear in Ashe 1820 Wilkes Wm Rgn (s/o Peter Sr) Wm Rgn stayed behind while father Peter and brothers went to Overton TN. He had 6 males/son in HH b. 1795-1820 I think 5 of his 6 his sons were: Caleb b. 1800 who is later in Fentress by 1828. He appears in 1830 Fentress near Peter Rgn Jr but does not appear in 1833 Fentress Tax. He is likely on to MO where we find him in 1840. I dont think Caleb is s/o Peter Jr as some reports even though he is closely associated with Peter Jr while in Fentress. James b. 1807 Charles b. 1808 Peter b. 1810 William b. 1810-15 1830 Wilkes Charles Riggan (s/o Wm of 1820 Wilkes) Wm may be one of the the older males in HH b. 1770-1780) However a Wm Rgn b. 1770-1780 appears in 1830 Ashe with now 5 males/sons in HH. The one gone from HH is likely Charles in 1830 Wilkes. But who are the two older males is Charles' HH b. 1770-1780? 1840 Ashe Wm Rgn This Wm is either the male (Wm Sr) b. 1770-80 or male (Wm Jr) b. 1810-1820. James Rgn b. 1800-1810/b. 1807 He could be a s/o Wm Rgn. He is in 1850 Watauga NC. Do not see Wn Rgn in 1850 Ashe or Wilkes. He could be the Wm Rgn in 1850 Texas MO age 75/b. 1775 with wife Litty age 72. But who is the Wm Reagan buried in Ann Reagan Wood Cem in Fentress Co allegedly b. 1776/1782? Is the birth date 1782 actually on the headstone of Wm Rgn? Jim Jim to Sarah I did my looking some years ago and have sketchy notes now so everything here would need to be verified. I apologize for being a poor researcher those years ago. I have an entry for Peter Regan having a land grant in Ashe Co, NC (which was formed in 1799 from Wilkes Co, NC) 12.14.28.238 In 1799 and 1802. Since he lived in Wilkes Co earlier he may not have moved. This might just be a country created around him. I don't find him listed in the Census of 1800 there but Eli Ragan, Nathan Ragadon, and Charles Regin are listed. The total male population then in that county was 1,350. In the 1810 census for Ashe Co I have William Finley, M Ragens, Charles Riggins and James Rippu(?). 1815 tax list for Ashe Co: David Ragon and Daniel Ragon An interesting entry for me was a land grant for George Smith in 1801 and 1802 (12.14.28.267) and the name George Smith turns up in my Fentress Co family later. I tend to believe that the group around Peter Reagan moved together across NC and into TN (or left relatives along the route) so I keep searching for any familiar names. Here is another event that connects a lot of people later in Fentress Co. Rachel Lindsay (widow of Joseph Lindsay and parents of Peter Reagan's wife) died in 1806 in Warren Co, NC, where Peter had moved from; and a lot of purchasers at the estate sale seem to be connected to the Fentress families.
