"Spent early childhood at Hampton. Then, with proceeds from bequest from Capt. Charles Ridgely, attended Dickinson College. Eventually sued his uncle, Charles Carnan Ridgely, heir to the Ridgely fortune and later Governor of Maryland. The lawsuit papers are wonderful. Served time in prison for debt, but was also a member of Maryland General Assembly 1819-1826."
