Man's Death in Trailer Fire 'Accidental'
Coronor William R Fatora said this morning that he issued a certificate of accidental death for
88 year old Carl H Bachert, who was overcome by smoke from a fire in an addition to his
mobile home along Mountain Road in Tilden Township. Fire fighters discovered the victim,
fully clothed, but shoeless, laying face down in the trailer hallway about 8 am Tuesday, according
to Timothy L Wilhelm, chief of the Union Fire Co Hamburg. Trooper Martin R Goetz, a state
police fire investigator, said a malfunction in a wood burning stove sparked the blaze, which may
have smoldered for some time before flames broke out. Barchert was born in New Ringgold, a
son of the late Henry and Minnie Faust Bachert. He was the husband of Betty Keppley
Shanaman Bachert. His first wife Esther Brobst Bachert died in 1967. He was a life member
of the Union Fire Co, Bethel and Roedersville Fish and Game Ass. Bachert was a self
employed lumberman before retiring. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter,
Helen Rausch, New Ringold RD1, and three sons Clarence, Annville RD1, Harold, Pine Grove
RD3, and Richard, Palmerton RD1.
