  • Note: He settled in Bristol, RI, the part now Barrington, about 1690. He wascalled both Ensign and Lieutenant. In April, 1718, he was chosen one of the committee of three in thenew town of Barrington (incorporated, 1717) 'to treat with Rev. Mr.Samuel Perry about what the town has voted with respect to himself,' andmake report to this meeting, which was adjourned for two weeks. Again in 1728, 'Lieut. James Adams' was chosen one of a committee ofthree, 'all of whom have had experience in making proposals,' to concludewith Mr. Peleg Heath of Roxbury, who was elected minister March 28, 1728. He made his will March 19, 1782-3; proved Sept. ye 18, 1788, as perProbate Records, Taunton, Mass. The will gives to his wife 'Mary' thenew end of the house which be occupied, while she remained his widow, herchoice of a bed, and £18 annually to be paid, £6 each, by the three sons,James, Ebenezer and John. To his son James he gives all the land and his'long lot,' except what he had disposed to his sons Ebenezer and John. ToEbenezer he gives the land he lived on, excepting 34 acres of the southend, which he had sold, the hjoues he occupied, and a third part of allhis cattle and sheep. To John he gives haalf the fam on which he lived, and one third ofthe cattle and sheep. To Mary he bequeths £180 in money, to be paid bythe three sons in one year. To daughter Safah Tiffany he bequeths allshe had received, and £50 in money, to be paid by the three sons in twoyears. James, Ebenezer and Johnw were to be the executors.
