'DANIEL SMYRAM DIETZ and LULA PETERS

Daniel Smyram Dietz, the seventh child and third son of DanielFrederick Dietz and Matheny
Ann Cordell Dietz, was born on 10 November 1861 in Catoosa Cbunty,Georgia. He was the first of the Dietz children to be born after thefamily had moved from Lafayette to the Boynton area.
On-31 July 1882 Daniel married Lula Peters in Catoosa'County,Georgia. Born on 6 December 1862, probably in Jackson or Bartow/CassCounty, Georgia, Lula was the daughter of Jacob Born Robertson Peters andBarbra Tinney Peters. This family had moved to Catoosa County sometime inthe late 1870's, purchasing property near the present-day Boynton Driveentrance to Chickamauga Park.
Daniel and Lula lived on the north side of Dietz Cemetery, and theirfarm lay on both sides of Dietz Road. Besides farming, Daniel had awoodworking shop and a blacksmith shop. He made furniture, farm tools,and many other household items. He also made wooden coffins, and Lulamade the black sateen linings.
When Pleasant Hill (Boynton) Baptist Church was founded in August1884, Lula Dietz was one of the first members received into membership'by experience.' Along with his brother C. F. Dietz, Daniel served asexecutor for their father's estate.
Daniel had rented out additional farmland at the Ross place, andeach day Lula took the buggy and brought lunch to Daniel and the boys. Inthe late summer of 1904 Lula and her son Amos drank from an unused wellthere on the Ross place and both contracted typhoid fever. Amos nearlydied, but Aunt Sallie Akins Dietz took him home with her and nursed himback to health. However, Lula grew sicker and sicker, and she died at theage of 41 on 5 September 1904. She was buried in Dietz Cemetery.
Lula had always objected to Daniel and the boys playing theirfiddles and banjo for dances, and when she died, they put away their bowsand instruments, never to play again.
Daniel never remarried, and he always made his home with Amos'family or later with Bob's family. His grandchildren remember him as agentle, soft-spoken man. Whenever any of them did anything theyshouldn't, their granddad would never fuss at them but would say quietly,'Now I wouldn't do that if I was you.' They all say that he was thekindest, most patient man any of them have ever known. He had an even,easy-going temperament, and he always had time to answer the children'squestions, to show them things, or to spend time with them.
Daniel died at age 79 on 24 May 1941 at the home of his son RobertDietz on Dyer Bridge Road. He was buried beside his beloved Lula in DietzCemetery.

Uncle Sid told this story when he was on his deathbed, just a few daysbefore he died:
They were making sorghum, and Grandpa Dietz sent Sid, Daniel, and Willback up to get another
barrel for syrup. Sid and Daniel decided that it would be easier to rollthe barrel downhill if they put Will into the barrel and rolled it. Thevtold Will, who was still a boy, that if he'd get in the barrel, he couldjust roll back down the hill and wouldn't have to walk. They talked Willinto climbing in, and then they gave the barrel a good shove. That barrelrolled down that hill and got to going so fast it kept on going andclimbed right up a tree! And Will was skinned from 'A' to 'Z' ! EdithDietz Rich
