  • ID: I01434
  • Name: James J. Ray
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 29 DEC 1819 in Alabama
  • Death: 26 JAN 1857 in Monroe Co, AL
  • Burial: Old Medlock Cemetery, Perdue Hill, Monroe Co, AL
  • Note:
    1850 Conecuh Co, AL Census
    20 Nov 1850
    Reel: M432-3 Page: 385B
    Dwelling 789 Family 789
    Perryman, Elizabeth, 79, F, 800, SC
Perryman, Barrot S., 36, M, SC (I have seen where he is listed as an idiot.)
Ray, James, 30, M, Overseer, AL
    Next door is Alexander Perryman.

It is possible that the James Ray who married Sophia Medlock is the James Ray who is listed as "overseer" in 1850 Conecuh Co, AL, Census with the family of Elizabeth Travis Perryman and her son Barret (see notes for Elizabeth Travis Perryman).

    Subject: I FOUND IT !
I found this picture of James J Ray's headstone. It was taken several years ago. It was in the old Medlock cemetery at Perdue Hill. Some people have said it was McConnico cemetery. I wonder if its still there as the old Medlock place was sold to Georgia Pacific. Maybe they did something with the cemetery as none of the people I know were there are listed anywhere. I found the actual photo among my genealogy stuff.

    1/13/2000: From Emma Panske-Phillips:

Nanci, another lister sent me the following info.
Found in the Concord Methodist Cemetery in Conecuh Co, AL
    Marion E. Ray 1846-1899
    Mary B. Ray (Mother) 3-24-1818-10-20-1906

    Mary E. Ray 8-25-1848-5-22-1898
Probably the only interest to you will be if they are buried near any of your Perrymans in Conecuh, which might indicate family ties ???

Also in the Edgefield , SC census for 1850
#1324 Martin Medlock 23 male farmer 3000 born SC (I don't know who he is)
Telitha 18 female SC (might be Tabitha ?) Could be Tabitha Eliza Lanier ???)
    George W. 4/12 male SC
No Perrymans here at this time

    Abbeville SC census 1850
#1096 Wesley Medlock 27 male hireling SC
    Nancy 20 female SC
    Temperance 3 female SC
    Mary E 1 female SC

I don't know if any of this is of use to you, but sometimes the smallest clue starts you in the right direction.
    Emma
