  • ID: I0012
  • Name: James PROSSER
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT. 1791 in North Carolina
  • Death: 22 OCT 1854
  • Burial: Prosser Cemetery, Bartlett Hollow, Moore Co. Tn.
  • Note:
From the Lincoln County Tennessee 1850 census, it is stated that James PROSSER was born in North Carolina. The 1850 census gives his age as 57 years of age. The stone that was at his grave in Bartlett Hollow in Moore County, Tennessee has the year 1791 etched on it. This is a two year difference and that is probably not uncommon. James was a farmer and it states from the census that he had 3000 acres. This would have been cosidered quiet a holding for that time frame. James PROSSER married Frances RICHARDSON and it is my belief that James PROSSER had a sister named Priscilla that Married Drury RICHARDSON and that Frances RICHARDSON was a brother to Drury RICHARDSON. Therefore James married Drury's sister and Drury married James's sister. Drury was convicted of murder of his son in law Mansel Bartlett, and James signed as his surety.
I know the location of The Prosser Cemetery that is in Bartlett Hollow where James and Frances are buried. The sad note to this is that it has been destroyed by the property owners over the years.

From the Deed Book B, page 316, of Lincoln County, there is mention in a property sale the property of JAmes Prosser of late of Lincoln County (said land consisting of 270 acres lying on the head waters of
West Mulberry Creek in Civil District Nno. 5 of Lincoln County, Tennessee. I do not know the location of this property, but evidently it was in an area that later became Moore County, Tennessee.

In reviewing the North Carolina census, the only James Prosser that I was able to locate was in The 1810 Montgomery County census. This could have very well been him, I do not know. There were other surnames mentioned that were found in the Lincoln County area also.

Kathy Lindstrom a Prosser descendant and researcher, believes that William Buchanan PROSSER was the father of James PROSSER and that there two other brothers Jesse and William. We do know from Goodspeed's History, page 805, of Moore County, Tennessee that William B. PROSSER settled in Franklin County, Tennessee in an area that later became Moore County.
