Note: ALMON CANNON'S WILL ---- Recorded in Bedford County Tennessee Will Book II, page 3 This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Margaret Lipscomb
Knowing the uncertainity of life and feeling that death may come at any time, I wish to make this my last will and testament. I, Almon Cannon, and my two sons, John L. Cannon and Zacariah T. Cannon own in common as deed will show, two hundred and twenty six acres of land in 23rd civil district of Bedford County, Tennessee on which we now reside. Now in consideration of the love and respect I have for my wife, Eleanor Cannon, I will and bequeath to her all my right, title and claim that I have in said land her lifetime provided she outlives me. I also will and bequeath to the said Eleanor Cannon one third of all the personal property that may be on hand at my death, one third as above being considered my share in said personal property conditioned that the said Eleanor Cannon outlives me as before stated as to real estate and furthermore I will and bequeath my sons, John L Cannon and Zacariah T. Cannon aforesaid after my wife Eleanor Cannon's death, if they should outlive her, all of the said real estate interest bequeathed to her to be equally divided between them. I have still other children that I wish to remember in my last will and testament, to wit: Rachel E. Prince, William W. Cannon, Jane Cannon, Samuel S. Cannon, James J. Cannon, Nancy M. Cannon, Wiley G. Cannon, and Minnie F. Reed. Now I will and bequeath to said eight children last named the sum of five dollars each to be paid by my sons, John L. Cannon and Zacariah T. Cannon after the death of Eleanor Cannon, their mother. Now Rachel E. Price (sic) and William W. Cannon are dead, and as to them the five dollars will be paid pro rata to their children. In witness hereof I subscribe my name in full this the 14th day of August 1884.

Singleton, Clerk of the County Court of said county hereby certify that the above and foregoing is a full true and perfect copy of the last will and testament of Almon Cannon, deceased, as proven and admitted to record in said court at the August term 1897 as appears of record on the minutes of said court and from the original will now on file in my office. Witness my hand at office this August 25th 1897.
Robert L. Singleton, Clerk by E. Shapard DC Notes for ALMON CANNON: To all readers: I have no proof concerning the ancestors of Almon Cannon. I only have indicators. It is my opinion that he is descended from the Maryland/Delaware Cannons, specifically from "Nanticoke" James Cannon via his son Henry Cannon and wife Frances Newton via their son Willis Cannon who moved from Sussex County, DE to Scott County, KY in the 1790s.
Almon Cannon was born in Georgia at an unknown location on June 13, 1812. He was married 3 times. His first wife is unknown, but from the age of their 3 children he married the first time when he was 18 or 19 years old. Some researchers feel that his first wife was a MORGAN or a BLESSING. There is also a family tradition that his first wife may have been indian or part indian. He is recorded on the 1836 Tax List of Bedford County, TN in the 23 District near the village of Singleton. Other CANNONS on that tax list in that district were his brother, Elijah Cannon, Letetia Cannon (the divorced wife of Willis Cannon) and Newton Cannon, Gov. His second wife has been identified as Elizabeth Stewart by whom he had 4 children. Their oldest son was Samuel Stewart Cannon. It is assumed that Almon and Elizabeth divorced about 1844 and that Elizabeth married a man named Gibson sometime thereafter who either died or they divorced before the 1850 census (see notes on Elizabeth Stewart). Almon married Ellender Powell about 1845 by whom he had 4 more children.
Family tradition states that: 1. Almon's father was born in Ireland and that his mother was born in South Carolina. These birthplaces are the same in the 1880 census. 2. There was possibly a brother, James, who went to Texas and was killed on the way. 3. Almon grew up in indian country and learned many indian skills and medical cures. His neighbors would often come to him for indian remedies. 4. Almon in his early adult life lived in close proximity and worked for Willis Cannon and called Willis "uncle". This may have been a real relationship or could have been only a honorary title. If real then Almon's father, would be a brother of Willis Cannon of Bedford County, TN and of Augustus Cannon of Lincoln County, TN and of Minos Cannon of Madison County, Alabama who died in 1853 and is buried in Holman Cemetery in Lincoln County, TN, I have seen one (1) reference which states that his full name was Zacariah Almon Cannon, but have never been able to confirm this.
On 20 September 1865 Almon Cannon sold to his brother, Elijah Cannon a 112 acre farm in Lincoln County, TN (Lincoln County Deed book A-2, page 172). This deed was made in exchange for a note which Almon gave to Elijah on June 1854 in the sum of $1780.00." Douglas L. Foster 1608 Colorado Street Calvert City, KY 42029-8658 dfoster@apex.net
