The Eugene Review, Eugene OR, July 8, 1865, p. 3, under "Town and Country": Drowned - A man by the name of Wooley was drowned in Willamette River, about five miles above Wallace. Engaged in running logs down to the Springfield mill, and while endeavoring to get off a bar, he got into deep water. Those who were near him offered to render assistance, but he told them he could swim and needed none. He sank almost instantly and never rose. He was possibly stricken with cramps. He was 50. He arrived in this county about a year ago from MO. He leaves a family residing near Springfield to mourn his death. He was respected by all who knew him as an honest, hard working man. His body was found last Sunday.
