Peek, Carrier Route 1--"The next stop is at Reader's Corner. The Readers have lived here for many years. They have a beautiful home and the farm is one of the most fertile in this section [Editor's note; This is near the intersection of Dawson and McFarland Roads. At this time, Dawson Road did not extend to Highway 99W.] This is the end of the route in this direction. We turn about and start south, and take up the work again at Mike Coffee's place; thence up the hill at the summit of which is the home of Harry L. Tuttle. Mr. Tuttle is a new settler here, and is a hustler. The next place is the home of George R. Hall, Jr. This is part of the old Tom Waggoner place, and Mrs. Hall is the daughter of Mr. Waggoner. I am always glad to find the children of the early settlers sticking to the old home farm. The next stop is the home of L.N. Edwards, another old timer and son of Uncle Jimmy Edwards. Mr. Edwards is and up-to-date farmer. The next stop is at the old Berry Ingram place. Mrs. Ingram still lives here, and her son-in-law Barney Seits, runs the farm. Crossing the bridge which spans 'Muddy' we come to the railroad again at Bailey Junction, and this brings back to mind our friend J.C. Bailey, now of Plainview, Texas. His name is still discernible on the box, and we call it John Brown's knapsack because it is No. 84. Carl Gimpl now owns the place and is making a fine up-to-date dairy farm of it. The next place is owned by Dr. Emil W. Howard of Brownsville. The next stop brings us to the mail box of Robert Kyle. We have known Bob ever since he came to the neighborhood and we used to call him the curly-headed Irishman. He married Miss Addie Belknap, who was one of my schoolteachers. We now climb the hill, at the top of which is the far-famed Oaco Orchard. This is the first large commercial apple orchard to be planted in this vicinity. It's splendid showing is largely due to its local manager, C.J. Currin. This was formerly the home of Mrs. E.B. McElroy, widow of the late Prof. E.B. McElroy, who was at one time State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Across the road to the north is the old home of C.B. Starr, now of Portland, Oregon. It is known as the Anderson Colony Tracts. It is mostly in orchards, and several new houses have been built on it. This is our last stop of the day, and we swing down the hill to Monroe, on a good gravel road. This is a great contrast to the old muddy thoroughfare of a few years ago." ----------------------------------------------- Name: Howard, Emil W County: Benton Death Date: 16 Apr 1958 Certificate: 3721 Spouse: Tena ---------------------------------------
