(Gilmore Kelly was his uncle, brother of his mother accordi ng to other sources.) According to the "Portrait and Biographical Record of the Willamette Valle y", 1903, he finished his education at the age of 16 and went into the min ing business,"...which had surrounded his earliest and later years." He tr ied his luck in Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Colorado,"...before striking t he rich claim in Baker county, this state, which netted him a handsome for tune." He operated the claim for a couple of years, sold it at a profit, boug ht up surrounding claims, and had varying success until 1902. He then boug ht his farm of 761 acres"..on the old Corvalis road, and which constitut es a portion of the Samuel Haptonstall, Charles McCoy and Martin L. Charl es donation claims." 200 acres were under cultivation, a "commodious and c omfortabel" house was being built, and his intentions were to go into stoc k-raising. It was also reported that he was one of the first of his frien ds to enlist in the Spanish-American War. He started as a private in Compa ny G., Second Organ Infantry. He served fifteen months and participat ed in 26 engagements, including the battles of Malabon, Pasig and Malinta- Philippines. For meritorious service, he was promoted to Sargent. Discharge papers declare he was enrolled when 23 years old, 5 feet, 6 1 /2 inches tall, fair complection, blue eyes, brown hair, occupation- Mine r. "Sered during Spanish- American war 1898, and during Philippine Insurre ction, 1899, in engagement at Paco Feb 5, Mariguina & Satolan Feb. 7, Mari guina Road Mar. 6, Malabon Mar 25, Polo Mar 26, 1899. No wonds rec'd." H is commander was Captian Richard H. Barber. 1906: According to military pension application he crippled his arm and ha nd,"..the result of an accident which occured during the month of Augu st in the year 1906 at the time I was farming near Corvallis, Oregon, a nd was riding horseback from one part of the field to the other and whi le riding the horse on a gallop the animal stumbled in such away as to thr ow me over its head, I struck the ground with my full weight on my right a rm and hand..." 1920 Census: Age 44. Living with wife, Anna, 43, Sons Tolbert, 17, Georg e, 15, and had a boarder. Born in Oregon, Father from Missouri and Moth er from California. (Incorrect) Ditto for wife. They also have birth information on his children and his marr iage information. 4/22/1926: Through physical exam for pension application.. Piles, heart tr ouble, nose and wrist injuries. Past occupation as miner and farmer. Prese nt occupation "Oil-fireman-donkey engine". 12/21/1927: Physical examination for pention disability, 53 year old, 5'7 ", 150 lbs, blood pressure 140/78, heart rate 120b/m exercise, 90 b/m aft er 2 min. rest. Scar on right eye cornea from broken nose accident 16 ye ar previous. 50% disabled. 3/3/1930: Physical examination for pension increase, 5 ft, 7 in tall, 1 50 lbs, fair complexion, blue eyes, grey hair, former occupation was Labor er, no occupation at present, blood pressure 134/86. Determined to be 5 0% disabled due to deformed righ wrist from fracture in 1906. Death Certificate shows he died at age 58, had lived at Oak Grove, Oreg on for 35 years, His father was George N. Fawcett of Pennsylvania and moth er was Rebecca Jane Kelly of Kentucky. He had been a book- keeper for t he "Flora Lbr. Co.", last day of work June, 1932. Anna C.
