Amy Seyfried amysf@pacbell.net -------------------------------- Contact: Unknown Benjamin and Abigail were married in Mass. They came to Illinois near Chicago (Plainfield) where they bougfht land for so many shillings an acre (less then a dollar). Benjamin was engaged in drawing flour on a canal, near Plainfield. Benjamin had a license to preach in the Free Methodist Church. He left 3 years provisions in the house for his family when he left, but the house burned down and most of these were lost. The family moved into a house that was built of black walnut logs. Benjamin belonged to a band of men who helped the slaves over into Canada, where they would be free. He had a store room built under the floor of his barn where the slaves were kept till he had the opportunity to haul them to Chicago where a man had a boat. He was a grain shipper, but on the sly, he was also loading the boats with slaves and taking them across Lake Michigan to freedom. He had a wagon with a false bottom in the bed. He would haul grain and produce on the top part and slaves in the bottom. Benjamin return to Ill to take the rest of his family by going across the Isthmus of Panama, or around the Horn. Unable to persuade Abigail to come, he departed (by boat) and returned to Oregon were he remarried and raised another family. Benjamin had a store in Scramento, CA from 1874 to 1876, and returned to Cheshire, Oregon in 1876.
