Year-Month-Day Name Card Number County Grant Number Description
1785, 12/2 Reuben 13 Montgomery Co. "Z" p 432 170 acres on Cranberry Creek a branch of Little Reed Island a branch of Big Reed Island a Branch of New River
Reuben acquired 170 acres in the area know as Cranberry Creek that would eventually be included in Carroll County, Virginia. His property adjoined Ogle. One of his neighbors were Richard Shockley, who would become his fatherin law, and John Dodson, who was the grandfather of Samuel Dodson Jr whomarried Mary Polly Dalton, Reuben's daughter. Also nearby were John Williams Jr., and William Williams was the father of Rebecca Williams, the wife ofEnos Dalton. Reuben was active in County affairs serving as constable and surveyor of the road in the new County of Grayson. Reuben sold 100 acres of his land in 1797 to Samuel Brown, and the balance in 1801 to Thomas Ogle Jr. He moved his family out of Virginia into Tennessee about 1801. He is listed on the tax list in Tennessee as owning 200 acres of land for the year 1797, but may have stayed on in Virginia until 1801, when he sold the remainder of his land. The 1810 census for Reuben Dalton Sr was: 12101-11101. This indicates that living in his household were 1 male born between 1800-1810, 2 males born between 1794-1800, 1 male born between 1784-1794, 1 male over 45, who was probably Reuben Dalton Sr. The female included 1 female born between 1800-1810, 1 female born between 1794-1800, 1 female born between 1784-1794, and 1 female over 45 who was probably Elizabeth Shockley. This probably includes at least one of his married daughter and her husband.

In 1822, Reuben Dalton named his daughters and their married name in his will. I am trying to determine what happened to two of them. Polly Dalton who married a Dodson and Elizabeth Dalton, who married a Rucker. My relatives say that Elizabeth married George Rucker, however, the only Ruckers around are those who descend from Colby Rucker, and I have never found any mention of a son named George. So the name George may not be right. Reuben named Ann his third daughter as Ann Harrell. Ann was actually married to John Harville, probably a mistake in spelling, but it causes one to wonder. Any help appreciated, Please contact Don Hadrick by E-mail, DHadrick.
Reflections on Timothy Dalton, Grainger County, TN. DALTON GENEOLOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL APRIL 1999, Don Hadrick <DHadrick@aol.com>
The 1810 Census for Reuben Dalton Sr. was: 12101-11101 This indicates that living in his household were 1 male born between 1800-1810 (Timothy?) 2 males born between 1794-1800, (John Meredith and Carter). I male born between 1784 - 1794, (No Dalton fits this time frame and it is believed to be the Unknown Rucker who was married to Reuben's daughter, Elizabeth). 1 male over 45, who was probably Reuben Dalton, Sr. The females in this household included 1 female born between 1800-1810 (Hannah Dalton). 1 female born between 1794-1800, (believed to be Elizabeth Dalton who was married to Unknown Rucker). 1 female born between 1784-1794, (Anna Dalton? She was born before 1790 and did not marry until 1818). 1 female over 45 who was probably Elizabeth Shockley. I have been unable to determine what happened to Elizabeth Dalton and the Unknown Rucker who I believe were living in Reuben's household in 1810. It is possible that the child under 10 years of age belonged to them? If the child mentioned in the 1810 Census did belong to them, it still would not answer the question of where Timothy Dalton came from. So who were the parents of Timothy Dalton born in 1810? Was he the son of Reuben and Elizabeth, just as tradition says he was even though Elizabeth appeared to be too old to have children? There is another possiblity, one that I believe has not been considered. Anna Dalton, the daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth was born before 1790. In the 1830 Census she is listed as being between 40 and 50 years of age. In 1810 she was still living at home and it was not until 1818 that she married John Harville. In 1810 she was between 20 and 30 years of age. Could Anna Dalton be the mother of Timothy Dalton? I encourage anyone who has information ideas or opinions on this family to respond". TN from Archie Dalton, adalton478@hotmail.com I have visited what I believe to be the graves of Reuben and Elizabeth. They are in a cow pasture on what may be the original land purchased from Ms Wilson in 1801. This is the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the first Dalton in Grainger County. The cow pasture is an inappropriate place for a marker. I have, however, hired an attorney (grandson of the present owner) to search the deeds to verify whether this is the original purchase. I would like to place a marker and have priced one which roughly says:
In Memory Of Reuben Elizabeth Shockley 175? 1757 1822 1860 Dalton Rev War Vet 1st Daltons in Grainger County My thought is to place such a monument at Mount Pleasant (?) Church, RT 131, Thorn Hill, just past the zinc mine where Colby and Elizabeth are buried. Selection is solely because of central location, available to tourists without disturbing landowner. Perhaps a dedication ceremony by pastor or other in November, anniversary of deed. I would simply place an ad in the Grainger Co weekly inviting Daltons and their kin to the ceremony. If 2 come, fine.
16. A TRIBUTE TO REUBEN DALTON -------------------------------------------------- Recently a beautiful headstone was placed in Grainger Co. to honor the first Dalton settler there. At the cemeronies a booklet was given to those in attendance. The booklet was written by Archie Dalton, adalton478@hotmail.com, who was also responsible for the idea of the tribute. With Archie's permission, the story follows for all to read. "Reuben Dalton was born circa 1752, probably in Bedford County, Virginia. Widely believed for years to be the son of Timothy, Jr. that has been discredited lately but not completely disavowed. He acquired some 170 acres in the Cranberry Creek section of that part of Montgomery County, that became Wythe County in 1790, Grayson County in 1793 and would become Carroll County, Virginia. He moved there about Oct 21, 1782. The land grant area is also known as Little Reed Island and documented in Montgomery County. His property adjoined that of Ogle and John Witcher who is almost certainly the father or grandfather of Matilda, spouse of Reuben/Elizabeth's son Carter. His neighbors were Richard Shockley and Elizabeth Adkinson who would become Reuben's parents-in-law. Another neighbor was John Dodson, the grandfather of Samuel Dodson, Jr. who married Mary Polly Dalton, daughter of Reuben/Elizabeth. Also nearby were John Williams, Jr. and William Williams. William Williams was the father of Rebecca who became the spouse of Enos Dalton, son of Reuben/Elizabeth. Records show that Reuben served as an ensign in the militia circa 1780 [Reuben and a William Dalton are listed as being in the company of Captain William Bobbitts - from Militia of Montgomery County by Mary B> Kegley. Later both are listed in the company of Jonathan Isom.], as a constable and as a surveyor of a road in Grayson County. Reuben sold 100 acres in 1797 to Samuel Brown and the balance in 1801 to Thomas Ogle Jr., documented at pages 130 and 433 of deed book 1. Grayson County. "He is listed on the tax list in Tennessee as owning 200 acres of land for the year 1797 and is shown as purchasing, or registering 200 acres on the north side of Clinch Mountain [deed book A, page 248] from Rachel Wilson, et al, indenture made Oct 19, 1801. Timothy Dalton witnessed it. "A deed search, performed by Attorney Davidson, Rutledge and commissioned by Archie Dalton shows the chain from then until today. The Davidson brothers today own at least part of the property. If one stands in the slight hollow between the Davidson cemetery and the home of Fred Davidson, one can look up the pasture hill to the line of woods at the top. Just at that wood line is the actual resting place of Reuben and Elizabeth. The community chose to place the stone in this more accessible place to give it prominence and to avoid inconvenience to Fred or his cows. Fred has graciously offered to allow a fence or small stone at the actual gravesite. Such a gesture, if any, is left to the community. "People who do the math will realize that Elizabeth was over 50 when Timothy was born. While that seems improbable, Reuben's will names each of his children and specifically infers Elizabeth to be mother of the eldest, Enos. Their marriage took place about 1771 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Although some accounts have her death in 1860, no account can be found of her in the census or other records after 1823 when she may or may not have been the Elizabeth who witnessed the will of Carter. The date of death was deliberately left blank and can be completed later if research becomes conclusive. Reuben died in 1822. Many say it was 19 August but we cannot document that.
The children of Reuben/Elizabeth and their spouses are as follows: Enos, 1772 - bef 1860 M. Rebecca Williams circa 1772 - [often described as VA's most beautiful] Mary Polly - bef 1784 - bef 1830 Married Samuel Dodson, Jr. abt 1792. Reuben Jr. 1790 - 1820 M Nancy Shockley 4 Jan 1808. She later married William Adams. John Meredith 1795 - 29 Apr 1834 M Delphia Rucker 3 Feb 1813 [Archie's ancestors. Appreciation is due to: Mount Pleasant Church for their gracious consent to place the stone in their cemetery. Dana Dalton for finding a place for the stone and for coordinating its placement. The stone and this handout are courtesy of the Grainger Monument Company and the ownership of Shine's Restaurant of Rutledge.
