    9 July 1776 Military Action: Capt. Thomas Dillard, Lt. Jesse Heard, & Ensign
    Robert Dalton Jr. commanded a company of Pittsylvania Co. Minute Men
    who fought at Gwynn Island, near the mouth of the Rappahannock River.
    There, Lord Dunmore, Royal Governor of Virginia, and about 500 loyalists
    were fortified. After hours of cannon fire, the response from the island
    subsided. The last Royal Governor of virginia had fled by ship to England.

    Aug-Dec 1776 Cherokee Expedition: While stationed near Gwynn Island, the
    soldiers received orders to proceed to the western wilderness to defend
    settlers against hostile Cherokee Indians. Capt. Dillard resigned because of
    family concerns. Robert Dalton Jr. was promoted to Lt. They were
    commanded by Col. Christian. Dalton's military duties continued until 1783.

    9 Apr 1784 Deed of Trust: Robert Dalton [Jr] to Jeremiah Ward, both of
    Pittsylvania Co. Robert Dalton, being indebted to Jeremiah Ward [for] 45
    pounds & desirous to secure payment of the Debt, sell to Ward 3 tracts of
    land in Pittsylvania Co. containing 120 acres: land bought of Solomo
    part of another tract - tract of vacant land on which I have a warrant
    Lines: Pigg River, James Mitchell, & William Thompson
    I, Robert Dalton, shall, on or before the 25th of December, pay Jeremiah
    Ward the sum of 45 pounds with interest. If not punctually paid, Jeremiah
    Ward may upon giving reasonable publick notice, dispose of the lands for
    best price. After the debt is paid, Jeremiah Ward is to pay Robert Dalton
    surplus money. In case the lands shall not be of sufficient value to pay the
    debt, he the said Robert Dalton shall be lyable for the remainder.

    appear. Pound3.9 debt plus costs. {contains copy of Dalton acct with
    Dyer} 7:247. {John Dyer v. Thos Lankford contains a receipt from Thos
    Lankford to John Dyer. I do not understand it, but it seems to have to
    do with commission for Harmon Cook v. T. Dalton dated 1786.}
