!Her surname was listed as Caynote by her son, David L. Sheeks in his
"Genealogy Records of the Sheek Family from 1774," available at the Mitchell
Indiana Community Library, which library also provided the cemetery records.

!It also has been spelled Kanote, Canotte, Cannotte. and Canode. It is believed
to come from the German Knode or Kanode.

!After George built their home in 1816, I am presuming that all of th
e children
from that date on were born in the Sheeks House. I have read cases o
f wheresome of the children are mentioned as having been born there
, and others have
not been so cited.

!Legal documents on microfilm in the Genealogical Department of the I
ndiana
State Library in Indianapolis indicated that Elizabeth took legal act
ion
successfully, after her husband's death l) to have their home and lan
d put in
her name after her husband's death, and 2) to be named guardian of her
daughter, Cynthia. (See notes with Cynthia)

!Elizabeth's birthplace as being "near" Hagerstown, came from Lois A
. Cramer
and Gaylynn Wood Jean. David L. Sheeks' records only list the stat
e and date
of birth. Wayne Gard's "Sam Bass wrote "...Elizabeth Canotte, wa
s a native of
Hagerstown, Maryland." p. 6.

!Her cemetery record on computer at the Mitchell Community Public Lib
rary,
with other Sheeks, a copy of which is in my Sheeks Album, gave her da
te of
death and states that she was the wife of George Sheeks and was 76 ye
ars, 5
months, and 29 days old when she died. My P.A.F. date calculator mak
es her
birthdate 12 May 1780, which agrees with the record of her son, Davi
d L.;
however, Elizabeth's date of death in David's records erroneously ass
igns that
date to the Elizabeth that was married to his older brother, Samuel.

!Her place of death came from John Lynch, a Sheeks descendant, and ca
retaker of
the Sheeks Cemetery. Jean Lydigsen specified Mitchell as the town o
f death.

In Mary Jean (Speldie) Good's article about George Sheeks following m
y file on
George, she wrote: "On 6 February 1800, in Madison County Kentucky
, George
married Elizabeth Canote (Knode), born 12 May 1780, in Hagerstown, Wa
shington
County, Maryland. She was probably the daughter of John and Rosanna
h Canote
(Knode) who had moved from Washington County Maryland to Augusta Coun
ty
Virginia about 1790, and then to Madison County Kentucky in the earl
y 1800's.
Some of their children apparently preceded them. [New paragraph] Geor
ge amd
Elizabeth lived in Wayne County Kentucky for approximately sixteen ye
ars.
During this time seven children were born."

contacted me by phone in March 1998 and he eventually sent me copie
s of the
documents LDS had concerning the marriage of George Sheeks and Elizab
eth
Canote, i.e. LDS Microfilm 0183304, #1, Madison County KY Marriage Bo
nds, Loose
documents, p. 190, which lists the marriage of "George Sheaks and Eli
zabeth
Kanotes February - 6th Day 1800" among those Christopher Clark certi
fied that
he married "by virtue of Licence" in Madison County, May 1st 1800. On
e of the
pages indicates that George and Elizabeth were both of Madison Count
y KY. The
copies are in my Sheeks Album.
