November 7, 1874 ================= China vs. America -- Mr. PECK’s Chinaman came to grief on Wednesday last. It appears that Monroe HAUVER, who is also in Mr. PECK’s employ, was engaged pumping water into a trough for the horses when John marched up to the pump to get a pail of water. Monroe in a playful way pushed the water spout aside, took the pail, filled it and handing it to John, told him to go at the same time accompanying his order by gently applying his boot to the seat of his pants. John didn’t see any fun in the act, and in rather coarse English, made a disrespectful remark about Monroe’s mother. This led to trouble, and John was cuffed or pushed and in fury he ran to the house and shortly returned with a knife and went for Monroe as though he meant business. The latter not liking the prospect of being cut into steaks, ran away, closely followed by the Chinaman. In an unfortunate moment for John, he stumbled and fell, when Monroe turned and caught. John’s head now came into hard contact with the ground and he was severely punished. Mr. PECK hastened to the spot, separated the combatants, and took the knife.
