    Henry was the son of Thomas Blay and Lydia Barnes. Henry arrived in Port Jackson in 1829 with his parents on the "Harmony". Henry became an Engineer with the Lands Department. At some time towards the end of 1853 or early 1854 it appears he accompanied his brother Harmony to Melbourne. The pair returned to Sydney aboard the steamer "London" on the 15 th January, 1854. In 1856 Henry was living in Chippindale. He had moved to 40 Holt St, Newtown according to the Sands Directory for 1858. Henry was listed as the owner of the California Inn, 20 Parramatta Street in 1861. He was named as Street Publican of Parramatta in 1863, at the time his brother-in-law George Walkley wrote his will. In 1864 Henry was listed as n Engineer at 37 Botany St. He had moved to Balmain by 1871 and was still there in 1877. Henry and Adeline had nine children.

    Henry later moved to Petersham and was living their when he married Eliza. This property was in Yule Street and consisted of a block of land with a frontage of 20 feet and a depth of 100 feet. On it was a detached brick cottage, with a slate and iron roof, containing foor rooms, a kitchen, washhouse and bathroom. It also had a tiled verandah and iron railing in front.

    Eliza had apparently been Henry's housekeeper and much to the chargrin of his children, Eliza inherited all his belongings. According to Henry's funeral notice in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 27 April, 1910 Henry and Eliza were living in "Iolanthe" on the corner of O'Connor St and Deakin Avenue, Haberfield at the time of his death.

    Henry also had a leasehold property at Pyrmont. This property was on land with a 52 feet frontage on Harris Street and a depth of 65 feet. On it were three shops numbered 572,574 and 576 Harrius Street. They were built of brick on stone and hasd an iron roof.
