From notes supplied by Bruce Sinclair (8 June 2000) :-

" My father would have been five years of age, living at his fathers property "Donnybrook" near Meldrum, when his mother died. I know little of his early life as my dad was not one to talk a great deal of the past. He said, as a youngster, he was given a horse and saddle by his father and told to make his own way in the world. I believe his early years were spent as a stockman etc. He was an excellent horseman, as were all the Sinclair's. In all my knowledge of him he was employed by the Nymboida Shire Council on road maintenance. He was the ganger with his two horses, scoop grader & tip dray plus 2 other men. They maintained the section of road from the Dorrigo turn off near Ebor down to the Cedar Log Bridge on the Grafton /Armidale road, plus the side roads in the Hernani, Marengo, Bald Hills section. He did this up to the time of his death. He owned a property at Marengo where he lived, but for five days of the week he would be camped away from home, on the job, in a tent. During the harsh winters of the New England district, this was a hard and vigorous life, not entailing too many joys & certainly no comforts. During the last few years of his life, we lived in the small community of Hernani. He was a man who loved children, indeed I cannot recall ever being smacked by him. A hard worker & a man of high principles, he was respected in the community and by his employers."
