  • Note:
    Sarah Ann Ward married John Garbitt in 1835, however by the time she married William Shepper in 1839 the name was changed to Garbutt (BDM Records). Soon after her marrige to William Shepper the name was changed to Shepperd

    Sarah Ann was still alive on her mother's death certificate in 1874. Edward Sackville Edwards marriage certificate to Mary Briggs in 1870 shows him as being a bachelor, so it seems obvious that Sarah & Edward were never married.

    From studies that I have done I seems certain that Sarah was in fact the mother of Frederick Ward who was then adopted by her parents, & that Fred was born in 1833 according to his daughter Marina's birth certificate claiming he was 28 at the time of her birth in 1861. This date fits in with Sarah Ann's next child born to her then partener John Garbitt with whom they had a child in September, 1834 Throughout the career of Thunderbolt, when Sarah Ann changed her place of living, then Thunderbolt changed his area of activities.

    It is also interesting to note that when Thunderbolt "died" in Uralla in 1870, Sarah Ann disappeared & we have no trace of her after that. It is my belief that she went to America with Fred in late 1870 & eventually died in Ottawa, Canada. However the American Cencus of 1871 shows a Frederick Ward & Sarah Shepherd arrived in America in late 1870.
