RESIDENCE: 1796: "of" Danville, Vt [m.int]
BIOGRAPHY: "Dr Oliver Morse, one of the early settlers of Danville, resided in the eastern part of the town on the farm where J Wesley Morse now (1887) lives [labeled "Mrs.Morse" on 1850 Walling map - at south end of what is now (2006) called "Winn High Drive"], was a farmer and a physician, and practiced his profession for many years. He married twice and reared twenty-one children,..." [Childs]. This apparently does not mean "raised to adulthood" as, the new family monument at Danville Green states "& 7 infants" - who apparently remained behind with the Morrills.
BURIAL: Burial/Transit permits exist showing that the remains of Dr Morse, his two wives, and his son, Parker were "Removed from one cemetery to the Danville Cemetery Nov 8 1907" [bp] although the new monument mentions "& 7 INFANTS", their remains were apparently not moved as no permits were issued for doing so. When a state law caused "the inscription on all gravestones in town erected to the memory of any person who died prior to 1870" to be copied in 1919, Dr Morse was recorded at Danville Green Cemetery where he appeared on the new family monument, disposition of original stone unknown. Fred Badger (b.1911) recalls the old cemetery on the Oliver Morse farm "with all stones down when I was a boy [ca.1918], my uncle mowed over it, he'd use a hand rake to pull the hay down to where he could load it;... it was on the rise above the swampy area behind the barn". In the 1950s the top half of a white marble gravestone was found for Abner & Abigail Morrill who d.1853 & 1842; it is now (2006) stored in the neighbor's shed down the hill with two matching footstones, a veteran's stone for Oliver's grson, Oliver Langdon Morse, plus several pieces of broken foot/infant stones of white marble. Another stone which the present owner of the "Mrs Morse house" believes read "Betsey Morrill" or "Betsey Morse" has recently come up "missing"; it was a little over a foot wide, white marble, rounded on the top; it is probably the gs of Abner Morrill's 2nd wife, whose d. was never recorded anywhere but on this stone. Her daughter recalls doing some rubbings when she was a child, but does not know that any survive. A white marble footstone, 10" wide, 18" tall, with a rounded top has recently turned up on the Morse farm.
