Capt. Thomas Wheeler, "the Indian fighter," in Concord, Mass. in 1639, four years after its incorporation Sept. 2, 1635, b. England; the original records having entry: "Capt. During King Philip's war he was sent by order of Council of July 27, 1675 with twenty troopers, as escort to Capt. Edward Hutchinson, into the Nipmuck country; he started from Cambridge the next day, was severely wounded Aug. 2 in the Indian ambuscade at Quabaug, "alias Brookfield", and reached home Aug. 27, where the following Oct. 21 was observed as a day of praise for the safe return of Capt. Wheeler and his troopers. In his True Narrative of the Lord's Providence, called "the epic of New England colonial times" and of whose early copies only a few are extant, he gives an account of the expedition -- the treachery of the Nipmucks, his own wounds received at Wickabaug pond near Quabaug, his life saved by his son Thomas, the death of Capt. Hutchinson, etc.
