    THOMAS, Concord, son I judge, of Thomas of Fairfield, b. in England. freem an 18 May 1642, m. Ruth, dau. of William Wood, had Alice, who d. 17 Mar. 1 641; and by wife Sarah had Sarah, b. 10 July 1649; Joseph, 18 Aug. 1651; A nn, 20 Dec. 1653; John, 18 Feb. 1656; Mary, 20 Dec. 1658; and Thomas, 29 M ar. 1662; in Philip's war was a capt. who saw hard serv. espec. on the Qua boag ambuscade, 1 Aug. 1675, when himself was wounded with the son of litt le above 13 yrs. old; and his sup. officer, Edward Hutchinson, was mortal ly wounded. Wheeler wrote a modest narrative which is republished by t he N. H. Hist. Soc. In vol. II.; and he d. 16 Dec. 1686. Administration w as given to his widow Hannah and son Thomas upon his small estate 21 Sep t. following by Gov. Andros. How old he was, or in what part of Eng. b. c annot be ascertained though tradition with her customary tale, makes thr ee brothers come from Wales. His dau. Ruth, m. 7 May 1673, Ephraim, Jon es of Concord.

    Capt. Thomas Wheeler, "the Indian fighter," in Concord, Mass. in 1639, fo ur years after its incorporation Sept. 2, 1635, b. England; the original r ecords having entry: "Capt. Thos Wheeler hus. to Reuth his wife dyed 10 de cem. 76;" m. Ruth Wood, dau. of William and Margaret Wood of Concord. Cap t. Wheeler's name is found on Colonial records as follows: "Made free t he 18: 3 Mo. 1642 [May 18, 1642] Thom: Wheller;" -- Oct. 12, 1669, "Perso ns in frontier towns may lyst as troopers under Thomas Wheeler Senior of C oncord whom this Ct. appts to be their leiftent;" -- May 31, 1671, "Lef t. Thomas Wheeler is appd Captaine of 2d troop of horse in Middlesex bei ng the Western troope of that County." During King Philip's war he was se nt by order of Council of July 27, 1675 with twenty troopers, as esco rt to Capt. Edward Hutchinson, into the Nipmuck country; he started from C ambridge the next day, was severely wounded Aug. 2 in the Indian ambusca de at Quabaug, "alias Brookfield", and reached home Aug. 27, where the fol lowing Oct. 21 was observed as a day of praise for the safe return of Cap t. Wheeler and his troopers. In his True Narrative of the Lord's Providenc e, called "the epic of New England colonial times" and of whose early copi es only a few are extant, he gives an account of the expedition -- the tre achery of the Nipmucks, his own wounds received at Wickabaug pond near Qua baug, his life saved by his son Thomas, the death of Capt. Hutchinson, etc .
