  • ID: I00515
  • Name: Edward Mozley , Sr. 1 2 3
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT. 1732 in Lived in Amhurst Co., Bedford Co., VA and then Wilkes Co., GA
  • Death: AFT. 1788 in Wilkes Co., GA
  • Note:
Edward is said to have been born c. 1735-1740, but I believe that it was earlier. The earliest entry that I found was in 1750. Walter Mousley and Edward Mously witnessed a deed in Louisa Co., VA. While it was usual for a witness to be 21, in Old Virginia, an 18 year old did occasionally act as witness. Louisa County, VA was formed in 1742. Prior to that it was part of Hanover Co., VA.

Edward also lived in Bedford Co., VA and had property in Amherst Co., VA According to this collation, he moved to Wilkes Co., GA about 10 years after the Rev. War, or after 1788.

From THE GARTH FAMILY Descendants of John Garth of Virginia 1734-1986 by Rosalie Edith Rogers Davis, 1988.:

1750 Louisa Co., VA: Walter and Edward Mouzly witnessed two deeds-one to Thomas Ross and another to Forest Green (Source: Louisa Co., VA, DB A:379-381.)

In a copy of the INDEX TO MARRIAGE BONDS, VIRGINIA--1754-1870, Reel 57, p. 33, General Index to Marriage Bonds, Licenses, Minister's Returns, etc. for Bedford Co., VA--Husbands that was obtained from the VA State Library by Raymond Mozley: (Copy that I have has month and day cut off.)

In the MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, VOL. 35, NO. 2, Winter of 1996, pg. 101-105, "The Ten Thousand Name Petition Transcribed by Jean Pickett Hall" there is a discussion of the petition presented by the Baptists in 1770 requesting equal treatment under the Toleration Act . These petitions were noted in the Journal of the House of Burgesses. These petitions culiminated in a 10,000 name petition which was initiated with the Baptists but was signed by a number of people who were of other religions. This 10,000 name petition was a composite of petitions that were circulated and then the wording of the petition was cut off and each petitions signatures were cut off and pasted to the original creating a continuous roll with 10,000 signatures. A 'Memorial" and Petition that was dated Nov. 1, 1776 was signed by a "Edwert MousLgy" who I believe to be Edward Mozley, our ancestor. In this petition, it was set forth that there were still many who were violent for a reestablishment of the Episcopal Church and that it was preferred by the bulk of the people that it was an injustice to establish any one religion dominion over people who worshiped the same God, struggled for the same cause, giving these people preference over others. Also these people felt that it was an injustice to require the religious Secretary to contribute to the support of that church, making it difficult to support public worship in the way and manner that they choose. The petitioners wanted every religious denomination to be on equal footing, supported by their members, independent fo each other. Edward signed with others of Albemarle, Amherst, and Buckingham, Virginia.

The above was struck thru, and the following substituted: Ordered that Peter Harris, Patrick Harris, and John Harris, heirs of David Harris, deceased, have a warrant for 300 acres on Long Creek joining Walker, Allen, and Mozley's land, in lieu of an old warrant of their deceased father.'"

Text: Interesting information about early Campbell Co. Pages 531-535 give geneological info about the Mozleys. I am not sure that it is absolutely correct. This information may have come from MCCALL-TIDWELL AND ALLIED FAMILIES. Raymond searched for information to confirm or deny Samuel Edwin Mozley as fahter of Edwin and was unablel to find anything that linked Edwin to a Samuel Edwin Mozley. Raymand did prove that Edward Mozley, Jr. AKA Edwin, and Sarah Gathright are the parents of Samuel G. Mozley. Raymond proved that Edward Mozley, Jr. was the husband of Sarah Gathright and the father of Samuel G. Mozley. Never the less, it is very good information and gives some information of the modern day descendants of Samuel G. and Sarah Gathright. Pages 398 and 399 have selections from Mt. Carmel Primitive Baptist Church and includes the names Lucretia Morris and Leroy Morris. Pages 95b, 96b, 115b are pictures of Mozleys and a few of their connections.
