James T. Ragen enlisted [in Co. F, 17th Reg. N.C. Troops] on or about May 28, 1862. Discharged prior to July 1, 1862. Reason discharged not reported. "North Carolina Troops 1861-1865, a roster," vol. 6, p. 252. He applied for a pension in July 1901 and July 1902. Amy Ragan applied for a widow's pension in July 1903.

In 1870 Person Co. census, James Ragan was living with Amy, Louis (3) and James F. (2).

In 1880 Person Co. census, James Reagen was living with Amy, Lewis (14), James (13), Mary (4), and Margaret (3).

In 1900 Person Co., Holloway Twp, img. 26 of 36 on ancestry.com, James Regan (66) was living with Amey (64), Margaret (22), and (cousin) Bennie (40?). Amey reported having had 5 children, 2 of whom were surviving in 1900. Neither James, Amey, nor Bennie could read or write.
