"James enlisted in the Texas Militia in 1861 in the company commanded by Captain D. A. Nunn. In 1862 he served in Co., 1, 13th Regiment, under Colonel John. H. Burnett."
This is from Linda Mearse: "He served as a private, in Company B of the 13th Texas Cavalry, C.S.A. This regiment was dismounted and served as infantry. Although J. W. gave his date of enlistment as 22 February 1862, the official record has it as 22 February 1863. The last company roll on file, dated 29 February 1864, lists him as 'present sick.' He stated his enlistment term was three years, with a discharge date of around 15 May 1865."
