The Hasmonaean envoy to Rome Antipatros son of Jason at Josephus Arch.x iii.5. 8, may or may not have been son of the earlier eminence Jason so n of John, but there's nothing to connect these men with either the Has monaean Eleazar or Herod's father. Such connections on the basis of no mnclature alone may reasonably be advocated as a working theory if ther e's nothing contra (I'm currently doing a lot of that myself in Indo-Gr eek studies; including fusing the Diodotids of Bactria with the Achaid h ouse, and making Menandros' branch of Euthydemids an Attalid tochterste m) . But in this case there is plenty contra, and decisively so. It i s not Josephus who constructs a Hasmonaean lineage for Herod, but moder n scholars and antiquarians using Josephus' text uncritically and arbit rarily. -- Mark Passehl, ANCIENT-GENEALOGY, 30 Jul 2007
