    Some say he is son of Theobald Russell (d 1341) and Alianor Gorges (qv)
    William RUSSELL. M.P. for Melcombe in 1340/1; he was taxed in Melcombe in 1367/8 and was the largest tax-payer. He was a well-established merchant, and probably owned his own ships trading with the Continent (when the French wars permitted). He is said to have married a daughter and heiress of Muschamp. [At that time Melcombe and Weymouth were separate towns, separated by the river Wey. They were subsequently united as Weymouth.]
    He had a son Stephen, and possibly another son (or ?nephew) Thomas.
